Thin breakout. SPY closed at 778.51, above Thursday's 777.09 high with two stocks up for every one down, but on less than half its usual volume while large orders sold a net $1.1B of it.
New lows still edged new highs 193 to 182 and only 29% of stocks sit above their 40-day average, so this is still a bounce from oversold, not new leadership. A close back under 777.09 on Monday would turn Friday into a one-day head fake.
SPY 777.09, Thursday's high, decides Monday: holding above it with breadth this washed out usually extends the bounce toward the CPI print; a close below it brings 772.91, the 10-day average, back into play. QQQ still has to clear 757.18, Thursday's high, before tech can lead; it closed at 751.24. Wednesday's 8:30 AM CPI, expected at 3.6% against 3.4% last month, is the event that confirms or breaks the move, with the 10-year already at 5.28%.
Stocks shrugged off a weak consumer: the 10:00 AM Michigan survey showed sentiment at 46.3 against 47.6 expected, current conditions at 44.7 against 50.5, and one-year inflation expectations up to 4.7%.
Bonds did not move on it — TLT finished flat at 77.92 after Thursday's 30-year auction cleared at 5.62%, well above the prior 5.31% — so rates neither helped nor hurt the rally.
The real tell was metals: gold (GLD) rose 1.6% to 384.73 and silver (SLV) 2.8% while the VIX fell 4% to 14.79. Hedges bought alongside falling volatility point to inflation insurance ahead of Wednesday's CPI, not fear, with oil (USO) up only 0.6%.
• CCI — SpaceX is buying 800 MHz spectrum — tower owner Crown Castle jumped 15.3% to 79.40 on $1.1B traded, nearly four times its usual volume, which is why real estate led every sector.
• ASTS — AST SpaceMobile fell 10% to 51.31 on the same SpaceX spectrum deal — $2.7B changed hands at four times normal volume, and its two-times leveraged funds lost about 20%.
• MRNA — An NIH cancer-vaccine initiative sparked a biotech rally — Moderna rose 14.2% to a 52-week high on $6.2B, with NVAX up 16.2% and IOVA up 10.2%.
• HUM — Humana hit a 52-week high after a Medicare ratings boost — up 11.1% on $2.2B at more than three times usual volume; UNH gained 2.4% in sympathy.
• LITE — Lumentum's CEO said AI demand has it sold out through early 2029 — the stock rose 5.2% on $5.7B and pulled CIEN up 5.6%.
• FSLY — Fastly soared 16% on an analyst call — nearly twice its usual volume, $436M traded.
• ORCL — Oracle rebounded 4.2% on $3.6B a day after Thursday's drop — still well below its highs and under its 21-day average.
• Michigan survey — Sentiment fell to 46.3 with one-year inflation expectations at 4.7% — it raises the stakes on Wednesday's CPI.

Leading: Real Estate +1.86%, Health Care +1.38%, Financials +1.05%, Utilities +0.93%, Consumer Discretionary +0.79%, Technology +0.48%, Industrials +0.48%, Materials +0.18%
Lagging: Consumer Staples -0.02%, Energy -0.06%, Communication Services -1.24%
The percentage leader was not where the money went: real estate topped the board on about $290M, almost all of it the Crown Castle spectrum move. Financials took the most money at about $1.9B, led by V and MA up 2.7% and 2.5%, and health care drew $1.2B on the Humana and vaccine moves. Energy traded $1.8B and went nowhere, and communication services lost 1.2% as ASTS sank. The single biggest stock by money was TSLA at $14.9B on a 2% gain, followed by MSFT at $9.5B and AMZN at $8.6B, up 3.3%. Under the surface, large orders sold a net $1.1B of SPY and $460M of QQQ, reversing two straight days of net buying on Wednesday and Thursday.
After the bell the tape is quiet: only three names are up after hours — SGML, EMBC and HROW, each by under 5% on light volume — and the list is filled out with the session's biggest regular-hours gainers. The real movers came in the day: biotech on the NIH vaccine initiative (NVAX +16.2%, MRNA +14.2%, IOVA +10.2%), HUM +11.1% on its Medicare ratings and FSLY +16% on an analyst call. On the downside, PICS fell 19.9% after hours with no headline, and CCC slipped 3.1% on 1.5 times its usual volume.
The day's heaviest money sat in PLTR, up 4.9% on $7.4B, and MRNA, up 14.2% on $6.2B, both near their highs. SNOW added 7.2% on almost twice its usual volume, while HIMS and GME rose 10.1% and 5.3% on about one and a half times normal turnover.
No changes since pre-market.
Oil and a profit warning set the tone: USO is up 2.1% and DAL cut its full-year guide on fuel, while bonds bounce after Thursday's 5.62% 30-year auction. SPY is flat at 776.79, just under Thursday's 777.09 high and well above its 10-day average at 771.65. QQQ is the drag at 753, down 0.6% and still above its 10-day at 747.44, while IWM (+0.3%) and the DIA (+0.3%) are green.
Thursday's money went into optical chips — LITE $5.2B, COHR $2.9B, AAOI $2.1B — and into NVDA, the biggest name at $27.6B traded. It came out of telecom: T, VZ and TMUS lost a combined $3.1B in turnover on SpaceX's wireless push. Large orders bought a net $2.4B of QQQ and $1.2B of SPY, a second straight day of buying after three days of selling. Pre-market, the small amount of sector money is leaving XLK for energy and financials.
Thursday was broad — three stocks rose for every one that fell and 230 jumped 4%+ against 88 down — yet new lows still beat new highs 80 to 41, and only 29% of stocks are above their 40-day average. That pattern usually marks an oversold bounce in its early days, not a finished one. Gold up 2.0% with the VIX only at 15.58 says the bid is inflation hedging, not fear. The bounce gets real when new highs overtake new lows.
Since pre-market: TEAM set its 10:00 high and sits 1.4% under it, HUM 5.5% away; PCRX reached its dip level; META slipped back under its buy level.
The 10:00 AM Michigan miss — sentiment 46.3, inflation expectations up to 4.7% — barely dented stocks. SPY is up 0.3% at 776.28, a hair under Thursday's 777.09 high and above its 10-day average at 772.37. QQQ is up 0.3% at 750.00 but still 1% below Thursday's 757.18 high, with IWM keeping pace at 278.38.
TSLA drew about $4.5B on a 2.6% gain, LITE $1.8B on its sold-out comment and MRNA $1.2B on an 8.2% jump. The selling is in phone carriers — VZ $850M, T $775M, TMUS $403M, all down 8% to 10% — while tower owner CCI gained 10.4% on the same SpaceX news. Large orders are only about $38M net buyers in SPY and flat in QQQ.
Two in three stocks are up and 335 moved 4% or more higher against 183 lower. But new lows still beat new highs 128 to 85 and only 29% of stocks sit above their 40-day average: a bounce from oversold, not new leadership. Volatility eased to 15.02 while gold and silver rose, an inflation hedge rather than fear.
Since the morning run: WFF bounced well above its dip level and is no longer a buy; no other pick changed status.
The Michigan miss did no damage: SPY is up 0.5% at 778.10, just through Thursday's 777.09 high and well above its 10-day average at 772.72. QQQ is up 0.5% at 750.97 but still 0.8% under its 757.18 high, so the breakout is in the broad index, not tech. IWM keeps pace at 278.88 and the Dow leads at +0.7%.
TSLA drew $9.6B, AMZN $4.0B and LITE $3.8B, all higher, and MRNA added 9% on $3.2B. The selling is in wireless: T, TMUS and ASTS traded about $4.8B, all down 11% to 14%. Large orders sold a net $304M of SPY and $117M of QQQ into the rally.
Two stocks are up for every one down, yet new lows still beat new highs 170 to 119 and only 29% of stocks sit above their 40-day average. Volatility at 14.87 with gold up 1.4% says inflation hedging, not panic. Readings this low usually bounce first; turning it into a trend needs large orders to start buying.
Since midday: TEAM closed to 0.5% under its buy level, META slipped to 1.1% away and MDT drifted to 1.6% above its dip level.
Nothing has printed since the 10:00 AM Michigan miss, and SPY has kept grinding up 0.6% to 778.62, holding above Thursday's 777.09 high and its 10-day average at 772.85. QQQ is up 0.5% at 751.16 but still 0.8% under its 757.18 high, so the breakout belongs to the broad index, with the Dow leading at +0.9%. SPY has traded only 12.3 million shares against a 46 million daily average: thin participation.
TSLA drew $11.6B on a 2.2% gain, AMZN $5.4B and MSFT $4.9B, while MRNA and LITE took about $4.5B each. The selling stays in carriers, with TMUS down 12.8% on $1.9B. Large orders sold a net $438M of SPY, deeper than at midday, but flipped to $118M of net buying in QQQ.
Two stocks are up for every one down and 552 jumped 4% or more against 334 down. But new lows still beat new highs 181 to 147 and only 29% of stocks are above their 40-day average: an oversold bounce, not new leadership. Volatility at 14.88 with gold up 1.5% says inflation hedging, not fear; a trend needs new highs to overtake new lows.
Since the 2:38 PM read: SPY held Thursday's 777.09 high into the close at 778.51, but large-order selling in it more than doubled to a net $1.1B.
A weak Michigan survey at 10:00 AM — sentiment 46.3, inflation expectations 4.7% — did no damage, and the index ground higher all day. SPY finished up 0.6% at 778.51, above Thursday's 777.09 high and its 10-day average at 772.91, with the Dow (DIA) leading at +0.9%. QQQ gained 0.5% to 751.24 but stayed under its own 757.18 high, so the breakout belongs to the broad index, not tech. IWM kept pace, up 0.5% at 278.95, while SPY traded just 21.5 million shares against a 46 million daily average.
TSLA led all stocks at $14.9B traded, ahead of MSFT at $9.5B, AMZN at $8.6B and PLTR at $7.4B, all higher. Biotech was the day's theme: MRNA drew $6.2B on a 14.2% jump as the NIH vaccine news lifted NVAX and IOVA, and HUM added $2.2B on its Medicare ratings. SpaceX's spectrum deal split one group in two — CCI up 15.3% on $1.1B, ASTS down 10% on $2.7B. Large orders sold a net $1.1B of SPY and $460M of QQQ, the first net selling since Tuesday.
Two stocks rose for every one that fell and 597 jumped 4% or more against 374 down, yet new lows still beat new highs 193 to 182 and only 29% of stocks sit above their 40-day average. The VIX fell 4% to 14.79 while gold rose 1.6% and silver 2.8%: inflation hedging ahead of CPI, not panic. Washed-out readings like these usually bounce first, but a breakout on half volume with large orders selling needs new highs to overtake new lows before it becomes a trend.
ASTS (AST SpaceMobile) — fell 10% on SpaceX's spectrum deal, four times usual volume.
PICS (PicS N.V.) — down 19.9% after hours with no headline behind it.
WFF (WF Holding) — nearly four times its 21-day average, swinging 60% daily.
ORCL (Oracle) — rebound still under its falling 21-day average, 56% off highs.
Mon open — SPY 777.09 — whether Friday's thin breakout holds on real volume.
Mon open — QQQ 757.18 — tech must clear Thursday's high to lead.
Tue 3:45 AM — Fed's Waller speaks — last major Fed voice before CPI.
Wed 8:30 AM — CPI, 3.6% expected — hot print tests the 5.28% 10-year.
Thu 8:30 AM — Retail sales and PPI — whether the weak Michigan consumer shows up.
