Assessment

Rotation, not selling. Money left chips for oil and staples: Energy took $3.2 billion while SOXS, a bet against chips, drew $3.7 billion, yet SPY held Wednesday's 773.61 low and large orders bought $2.4 billion more QQQ than they sold.

Risk

Under the index it was worse than it looks: 350 new lows against 78 new highs, and 923 stocks fell 4% or more against 383 that rose that much. A close below SPY 771.66, its 10-day average, would turn this rotation into real selling.

Next

SPY 773.61, Wednesday's low, held by 50 cents: a Friday open above it with only 1 in 3 stocks above their 40-day average usually bounces toward 779.10, Wednesday's high. A break below opens 771.66 and then 768.96, its 21-day average. QQQ closed on its 10-day at 747.44, so another chip leg targets 738.70, its 21-day. Friday's 10:00 AM Michigan sentiment, 47.6 expected with inflation expectations last at 4.6%, is the first test.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

Oil and long bonds rose together, which reads as a growth scare inside tech rather than an inflation scare: USO gained 2.3% and TLT 0.9% even after the 30-year auction cleared at 5.62%, well above the prior 5.31%. The chip selling was AI-specific, set off by a report that OpenAI earns far less than earlier figures implied, which hit ORCL, IREN and the CoreWeave-linked funds. VIX rose 3.3% to 15.58, still a low reading for a day the Nasdaq lost 1.2%, and GLD added 0.8% while SLV slipped 0.7%, so the hedging bid went to gold, not silver. Jobless claims at 197,000 against 200,000 expected kept the labour picture firm, leaving Friday's Michigan inflation read as the next rate catalyst.

Key news & catalysts

• ORCL — shares slid after reports that OpenAI generates far less annual revenue than earlier figures implied — the trigger for the AI-infrastructure selloff that sank chips.

• IREN — fell as AI cloud stocks slid on the same OpenAI revenue report — its 2x fund IREG lost 14.9%.

• CMG — Jersey Mike's jumped 8% on takeover talk, pulling restaurant names with it — CMG rose 5.7% on nearly four times its usual volume and $2.3 billion traded.

• PCRX — up 44.5% on an analyst call with nearly 15 times its usual volume — $1.0 billion traded, the biggest single-stock move on the board.

• BTDR — Bitdeer AI signed an 8-year contract for a 60MW Malaysia AI data center, online in early 2028 — a rare AI-infrastructure win on a day the group sold.

• KOPN — won another $18.6 million U.S. Army award for its color MicroLED displays, bringing that program's funding to $34 million.

• SPCX — Grain Management agreed to sell its nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio to SpaceX — a fresh blow to telecoms, with TMUS down 5.1% and VZ 5.1%.

• KMI — Kinder Morgan lifted force majeure on its US-Mexico gas pipeline, restoring flows on a day Energy led every sector.

Conviction setups

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Energy +2.75%, Consumer Staples +2.33%, Real Estate +1.04%, Financials +1.02%, Materials +0.59%, Consumer Discretionary +0.56%, Industrials +0.39%, Communication Services +0.04%

Lagging: Utilities -0.12%, Health Care -0.36%, Technology -1.58%

Energy was both the top gainer and the money leader, with $3.2 billion flowing into the sector fund, and refiners MPC and VLO each rose about 4.7% on more than $1.1 billion apiece. Technology lost $1.8 billion and Health Care $1.8 billion, while Consumer Staples drew $1.2 billion as PG rose 1.9%. The single biggest stock by money traded was AAPL at $11.0 billion, followed by META at $10.3 billion and MDT at $9.1 billion on its earnings-driven pop. Large orders told a different story from the price: they bought $1.15 billion more SPY and $2.41 billion more QQQ than they sold, the second straight day of big-money buying into weakness.

Post-Market Gappers

No stock in the data is gapping after hours yet; CHRN, NRIX and ODC report tonight. The regular session's biggest move was PCRX, up 44.5% on an analyst call and nearly 15 times its usual volume, while HUM jumped 14.7% and ACN and CTSH rose 5.8% and 5.2% as IT-services money returned. The losers were telecoms and leveraged chip funds: TMUS, VZ and T each lost about 5% after SpaceX bought more spectrum, and AAOX fell 26.7% with the AI-optics trade. ALHC dropped 14.0% on a share offering.

Stocks in play

ACN is the strongest name moving, up 5.8% on news with $2.5 billion traded, and CTSH joined it up 5.2%, so the money is buying IT-services firms that sell AI work rather than the chips behind it. SOXS and SQQQ, bets against chips and the Nasdaq, drew $5.7 billion between them, a sign the moving money was hedging, not chasing.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:33 AM ET

No changes since pre-market.

Oil is driving the open: USO is up 3.2% on Houthi threats against Saudi oil sites, landing on top of Wednesday's 5.30% 10-year auction. SPY is down 0.6% at 774.16, a hair above yesterday's 773.61 low and still over its 10-day average at 771.14. QQQ is off 0.9% at 752.92 but holds well above its 21-day average at 737.81, while IWM is down 2.1% at 275.45, taking the full weight of the rate move.

Money is leaving chips and AI hardware and moving into oil and defensives: energy (XLE) took about $6.7 million in early trade and staples about $3.4 million, while tech lost about $2.7 million. The 3× bear chip fund SOXS is up 5.9% after drawing about $2.1 billion, and long funds on AAOI, COHR and ARM are down 7% to 11%. Large orders bought a net $1.6 billion of SPY on Wednesday; the bell tests whether they defend it.

Underneath, the tape is washed out: only 960 stocks are up against 2,570 down, new lows lead new highs 142 to 59, and just 31% of stocks sit above their 40-day average. Gold, silver and long bonds are all falling with stocks while oil rises, which points to rates and inflation, not panic, and the fear index has not moved off 15.08. Readings this oversold usually bounce within days, if SPY holds 773.61.

Takeaway:A rate-and-oil squeeze is hitting small caps hardest; SPY 773.61 at the open and the 1:00 PM 30-year auction decide whether this oversold tape bounces or breaks.
Morning10:33 AM ET

Since pre-market: MUU and NTAP broke out through their buy levels; P is 0.1% away, MU 1.5%, and PENG 3.2% above its dip buy.

The pre-market rate scare eased after the open: TLT turned up 0.3% and GLD 0.8%, while USO held a 3.3% gain. SPY climbed from 774.16 before the bell to 776.32, 2.71 above yesterday's 773.61 low and over its 10-day average at 771.97. QQQ is off 0.2% at 756.32, and IWM cut its loss from 2.1% to 0.5%, the biggest recovery of the three.

Energy took about $711 million, the most of any sector, with XOM up 2.6%; health care lost about $500 million on ARGX's 13.1% drop, even as PCRX drew $526 million. Large orders bought about $344 million more QQQ than they sold. Yet SOXS pulled in $1.0 billion, so Nasdaq buying sits beside heavy bets against chips.

The bounce is in the indexes, not the stocks: almost two fall for every one that rises, and new lows lead new highs 282 to 82. Only 31% of stocks sit above their 40-day average, a level that has usually come near short-term lows. VIX at 15.27 says nobody is panicking, so a wider bounce is likely if the 1:00 PM 30-year auction clears without a yield jump.

Takeaway:The index has bounced but most stocks under it are still falling; SPY 773.61 decides whether this stays a dip.
Midday12:34 PM ET

Since morning: P broke out through 155.00 at 10:44; MUU slipped back under its buy level and is now 2.6% away.

Oil set the tone again, with USO up 2.5% and XOM up 2.8%, while bonds stayed bid ahead of the 1:00 PM 30-year auction. SPY gave back part of its morning bounce and sits at 775.33, still 1.72 above yesterday's 773.61 low and over its 10-day average at 771.71. QQQ is off 0.5% at 753.94 and IWM 0.7% at 275.81, again the weakest.

Energy has taken about $1.75 billion, the most of any sector, and staples another $436 million, while health care lost about $918 million as ARGX fell 13.7%. META is the busiest stock at $4.5 billion while flat,. Large orders bought about $917 million more QQQ than they sold, yet SOXS, a bet against chips, drew $1.77 billion.

The damage under the index grew since the morning: new lows now beat new highs 446 to 77, and 836 stocks are down 4% or more against 216 up. Only 31% of stocks sit above their 40-day average, and VIX at 15.30 shows no panic. Washed-out stocks with calm volatility usually bounce, unless the auction lifts yields.

Takeaway:Most stocks keep falling under a flat index; SPY 773.61 and the 1:00 PM auction decide whether this stays a dip.
Power hour2:35 PM ET

No status changes since midday, but MU slid to 3.9% and MUU to 8.1% below their buy levels.

The 1:00 PM 30-year auction cleared at 5.62%, well above last month's 5.308%, and tech broke right after while crude pushed past $92.60. SPY fell from 775.33 at midday to 772.68, through yesterday's 773.61 low, but still above its 10-day average at 771.28. QQQ is down 1.4% at 747.16, just under its 10-day.

Energy took about $2.5 billion and financials $1.8 billion, while health care lost $1.4 billion and technology $1.2 billion. SOXS, a bet against chips, has drawn $3.1 billion and is up 11.3%,. Yet large orders bought $2.2 billion more QQQ than they sold, up from $917 million at midday: big money is buying what the crowd shorts.

Losers still dominate: 1,032 stocks are down 4% or more against 299 up, and new lows beat new highs 398 to 74. Only 31% of stocks sit above their 40-day average, and TLT up 1.0% says money is moving to bonds. Readings this washed out usually bounce within days.

Takeaway:Tech broke after the 30-year auction while oil ran; SPY 771.28 into the close decides whether this is a pullback or a deeper slide.
Closing4:35 PM ET

Since power hour: MU is OUT; NTAP and P slipped back under their buy levels.

The AI-revenue scare that hit ORCL in the afternoon kept chips under pressure into the bell: NVDA lost 2.7% and QQQ fell 1.2% to finish on its 10-day average at 747.44. SPY slipped 0.4% but held Wednesday's 773.61 low, closing near 774, while IWM and DIA finished flat to slightly green. The index damage stayed in tech; the rest of the market rotated rather than sold.

Energy took the most money at $3.2 billion, with XOM up 2.7% and refiners MPC and VLO up about 4.7%, and Staples drew $1.2 billion behind PEP's beat and PG. Technology and Health Care each lost about $1.8 billion, and SOXS, a 3x bet against chips, was the second-busiest name at $3.7 billion. Large orders still bought $2.4 billion more QQQ and $1.15 billion more SPY than they sold, so big money used the drop to buy.

The internals were weaker than the index: 923 stocks fell 4% or more against 383 up, and new lows beat new highs 350 to 78. Only 30.6% of stocks are above their 40-day average, a washed-out level that usually precedes a bounce within days. VIX rose just 3.3% to 15.58 while TLT and GLD both rose, which points to a rotation into safety, not panic.

Today's picks: MU broke its stop and is OUT; NTAP and P broke out in the morning but closed 2.0% and 2.9% below their buy levels; MUU never reached its buy level; PENG still needs its 70.90 dip.

Takeaway:Tech sold and oil rotated in, but SPY held 773.61 with big buyers stepping in; a Friday break below 771.66 turns rotation into real selling.
