Assessment

Selling under a flat index. Oil fell 4.7% and 763 stocks hit new lows against 89 highs, while chips like AMAT and MRVL lifted QQQ 0.3%. No name set up for the breakout today; only the KOD dip plan is live.

Risk

Large orders sold a net $1.75B of QQQ even as it rose, so the chip bid holding the index up lacks big-money backing. A QQQ close under its 10-day average at 733.94 would confirm the selling has reached the leaders.

Next

SPY 765.58, its 21-day average, decides it: a close back above with only 1 in 4 stocks over its 40-day average usually starts an oversold bounce toward Monday's 769.54 high. A close under the 50-day at 761.11 opens a deeper slide. If Wednesday's 8:30 AM core inflation print comes in above the 3.3% expected, rates lean against any bounce; MU earnings Wednesday then decide whether chips keep carrying the index.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

Oil was the day's driver: USO fell 4.7% to 142.98 as crude pulled back on signs that Middle East export routes are loosening, and that pulled energy down 0.97%, the worst sector. Bonds did not rally on it — TLT slipped 0.2% with the 10-year still near 5.17% — so cheaper oil did not buy stocks any relief on rates.

Gold did the hedging instead: GLD rose 1.35% to 383 and SLV 0.96%, while the VIX sat flat at 16.09. Job openings came in at 7.08 million against 7.23 million expected, a softer labor read that helped gold more than stocks. Wednesday's 8:30 AM core inflation print, seen at 3.3%, is the next rate test.

Key news & catalysts

• Oil — crude fell as Middle East export bottlenecks eased — USO -4.7%, the session's biggest cross-asset move and the reason energy led lower.

• IOVA — raised its 2026 revenue guidance on demand for its Amtagvi therapy — stock +31.5% on $1.08B traded, 4.4 times normal volume.

• CCL — beat earnings, $1.43 a share vs $1.35 expected, and its CEO said vacation demand is holding up — stock +13.4% on $1.85B, lifting RCL 7.6% with it.

• KMX — earned $1.16 a share vs $0.73 expected and said even its lowest-income buyers are holding up — stock +4.7% on 4.2 times normal volume.

• AMAT — Kioxia joined its center to develop next-generation AI memory — stock +5.8% on $3.6B, leading the chip bid ahead of MU earnings.

• PWP — Piper Sandler is weighing a bid for Perella Weinberg — PWP +11.8%.

• CNXC — beat on earnings but cut its full-year sales outlook below estimates — stock -3.8% after the close.

• SDEV — said it knows of no news behind unusual trading — stock +112%, a move with nothing under it.

Conviction setups

KOD — buy dip 78.13 · stop 60.49 · SOON — Monday's 41-times-volume surge; waits for a pullback.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Utilities +1.26%, Communication Services +0.35%, Industrials +0.28%, Consumer Discretionary +0.26%, Technology +0.11%, Real Estate +0.04%

Lagging: Health Care -0.22%, Financials -0.35%, Consumer Staples -0.52%, Materials -0.75%, Energy -0.97%

More money went into falling sectors than rising ones — about $8.1 billion traded in the five decliners against $6.6 billion in the six gainers. Financials were the single biggest sector by money at $2.9 billion while slipping 0.35%, and energy traded $1.9 billion on its 0.97% drop. Utilities were both the percentage leader and the money leader on the upside, $1.9 billion on a 1.26% gain — a defensive bid, not a growth one.

The single biggest stock by money was BE, $6.9 billion traded on an 11.1% jump, followed by LITE at $5.7 billion and MRVL at $4.1 billion — AI power and chips took the growth money. Large orders bought a net $2.9 billion of SPY while selling a net $1.75 billion of QQQ, the reverse of Monday, when big buyers favored QQQ.

Post-Market Gappers

After the close the tape is quiet: only two names are up meaningfully — PEGA +6.8% and ACHV +4.6%, both on light volume and no fresh news. The losers list is led by small caps: EGG -10.6% on 6.4 times normal volume and ONEN -9.5%.

The one earnings-driven after-hours move is CNXC, -3.8% on $73M traded after trimming its sales outlook. The regular session's real movers were IOVA +31.5%, CCL +13.4% and BE +11.1%, all on news or earnings.

Stocks in play

The strongest setups were earnings and news reactions: CVNA +5.2% on 1.4 times normal volume and AMAT +5.8% on its AI memory partnership, with RAM, a 2x memory fund, +5% riding the same theme. APLD added 4% after a billionaire investor took a stake, but it still sits 50% under its high.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:34 AM ET

No changes since the 8:25 AM pre-market read.

Havens and bonds are being sold together before the open: GLD is down 3.2%, SLV 5.6% and TLT 0.8%, while oil slips 1.7% despite the Iran "hoax" headline. After Monday's bill auctions cleared at higher yields, this reads as a rates move. SPY is down 0.6% at 766.73, right on its 10-day average of 766.83 and a point above its 21-day at 765.72. QQQ is off 0.7% at 739.03 but still 6 points above its 10-day, and IWM is down 0.5% at 280.67.

Monday's money went into the index and the megacaps: big orders put about $1.25 billion net into SPY and $2.07 billion into QQQ, the most in a week, after net selling on Sept. 24 and 25. NVDA was the most traded stock at $32.8 billion, then META at $20.2 billion, while AMD gained 1.5% on $13.4 billion. Before the open, only health care is higher, and energy is the most sold at about $3.7 million.

Underneath, the market is washed out: only 27% of stocks are above their 40-day average and new lows outnumbered new highs 264 to 51 on Monday, even as 2,060 stocks rose against 1,131. VIX at 16.10 is flat, so nobody is paying up for protection on this dip. Oversold readings like this usually bounce within days, provided SPY holds 765.72 and new lows start to shrink.

Takeaway:Metals and bonds are being sold before the open, and SPY's 21-day average at 765.72 decides whether that spills into stocks.
Morning11:00 AM ET

Since pre-market: VLO broke out at 10:01 and hit its buy level; TWLO is 1.7% and PANW 2.9% under their 10:00 highs.

The pre-market metals rout reversed, GLD now up 1.2%, but TLT is down 0.6% after job openings missed. SPY is flat at 765.33, just under its 21-day average at 765.69 and above its 30-day at 764.71. QQQ is up 0.3% at 739.70, 1.7 points from Monday's 741.42 high, while IWM is down 0.4%.

The money is in chips: NVDA traded $6.3B, SOXL $3.6B and ORCL $2.3B up 7%, with AVGO up 3.3%. Energy lost about $559M as oil fell 2%. Large orders bought $421M of SPY net and sold $222M of QQQ, so big money is fading the chip bid.

The move is narrow: new lows beat new highs 476 to 72 and only 27% of stocks sit above their 40-day average. That washed-out reading with volatility at 15.93 usually precedes a bounce within days, not a crash. Until new highs pick up, a handful of chip names are holding the index.

Takeaway:A few chip names are holding up a tape where most stocks are falling, and SPY 765.69 decides whether that turns into a bounce or a slide to 761.
Midday12:33 PM ET

Since the morning: ZSL broke out at 11:27 on 2.07× volume; no earlier pick changed status.

Rates took over after 11:30, when the one-year bill cleared at 4.40% against 3.98% and TLT slid 0.7%. SPY slipped under its 21-day average at 765.45 to 763.17, down 0.3%, with the 50-day at 761.05 the next floor. QQQ is flat at 736.87, barely above its open, while IWM is down 0.8% as small caps feel rates most.

The money is still in chips: NVDA traded $10B, SOXL $5B up 4.6% and ORCL $3.9B up 5.1%. Financials lost about $1.2B and energy $1B as USO fell 3%, while utilities took in $760M. Large orders bought $824M of SPY net but sold $212M of QQQ, so big money is not chasing the chip leaders.

The selling is spreading: new lows jumped to 885 from 476 at the morning read, against 77 highs, and decliners outnumber advancers two to one. Only 27% of stocks are above their 40-day average, a level that usually bounces within days. VIX at 16.22 says this is a rates squeeze, not panic, so a bounce needs yields to calm first.

Takeaway:Rates are pushing most stocks to new lows under a flat index, and SPY back above 765.45 is what turns this into a bounce.
Power hour2:33 PM ET

No changes since midday; TWLO closed to 0.3% under its buy level and PANW to 1.8%.

Oil took over from rates after midday: USO extended its drop to 4.1% on easing Middle East export routes. SPY is down 0.2% at 763.71, stuck under its 21-day average at 765.54 and its 30-day at 764.60. QQQ is up 0.1% at 737.08, holding above its 10-day at 733.81, while IWM is down 0.6% at 278.21 as small caps carry the rate damage.

Money left financials ($2.0B), energy ($1.4B) and health care ($1.2B), and went to utilities ($1.3B) and a handful of chip and AI names: META traded $10.6B, AMD $6.7B and SOXL $6.1B up 4.2%. Large orders bought a net $1.58B of SPY, but sold $630M of QQQ, so big money is buying the index cheaply and selling the leaders into strength.

The internals keep getting worse: new lows rose to 930 from 885 at midday against 78 highs,. Only 27% of stocks sit above their 40-day average. Readings this washed out usually bounce within days, but the bounce needs new lows to stop expanding first.

Takeaway:Most stocks keep sliding to new lows under a flat index, and SPY back above 765.54 is what turns it into a bounce.
Closing4:33 PM ET

Since power hour: VLO, TWLO, PANW and ZSL finished without a breakout on enough volume, so the watch closed with no live pick besides the KOD dip.

Oil set the tone: USO fell 4.7% as Middle East export routes eased, and energy slid 0.97%. SPY closed at 764.99, down 0.08% and just under its 21-day average at 765.58, but still above the 50-day at 761.11. QQQ rose 0.33% to 738.95, above every average it tracks, carried by chips, while IWM lost 0.26%.

The growth money went to AI power and chips: BE traded $6.9B on an 11.1% jump, LITE $5.7B and MRVL $4.1B, with AMAT +5.8% on $3.6B. Financials were the busiest sector at $2.9B while falling, and the five losing sectors traded $8.1B against $6.6B in the winners. Large orders bought a net $2.9B of SPY but sold a net $1.75B of QQQ into its gain.

Underneath, the selling was broad: 6,515 stocks fell against 4,162 that rose, and new lows beat new highs 763 to 89. Only 27% of stocks sit above their 40-day average, an oversold reading that usually precedes a bounce within days. Gold rose 1.35% with the VIX flat at 16.09, so money is hedging quietly rather than panicking.

Today's picks: VLO, TWLO and PANW never broke out on enough volume; KMX hit its dip level; CVX is still 0.5% away; DELL still 2.2% away.

Takeaway:The index held while most stocks sold off; SPY back above 765.58 starts an oversold bounce, under 761.11 extends the slide.
