Assessment

Selling under a flat index. Bill auctions cleared higher, gold fell 4% and new lows beat highs 1,161 to 106, while large orders bought SPY and QQQ for $3.3B. No name held its breakout into the close; ABNB and BKNG slipped back under.

Risk

The index is being held up by a handful of buyers while 8,490 stocks fell; if large-order buying in SPY and QQQ stops, nothing underneath holds. A second close under SPY 765.72 confirms it.

Next

SPY closed at 765.39, just under its 21-day average at 765.72 and below Friday's 766.29 low: reclaiming 765.72 with only 1 in 3 stocks above their 40-day average usually sets up a bounce toward Friday's 772.28 high, while a close under the 30-day at 764.66 opens the 50-day at 760.98. QQQ at 736.50 is under Friday's 739.64 low with its 10-day at 733.05 the next floor. Core PCE on Wednesday at 8:30 AM is expected at 3.4% against 3.3%; a hotter print extends the rate squeeze that sank gold today.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

Short-term rates were the driver: the 3-month bill cleared at 4.11% against 4.015% last week and the 6-month at 4.285% against 4.155% at the 11:30 AM auctions, and everything that pays no yield got sold. GLD fell 4.0% to 377.54 and SLV 5.7% to 54.82, while TLT lost 0.9% to 78.63 as long bonds went down with them.

VIX rose 8.3% to 16.10, but with gold falling alongside it this reads as a rates unwind, not a scramble for safety. Oil was the one asset bid, USO up 1.1% to 150.01, which is why energy was the only group taking real money. The Dallas Fed factory index slipped to 9.8 from 11.6, adding nothing to the growth side of the ledger.

Key news & catalysts

• NVDA — announced a record share buyback — up 1.7% on $32.2B traded, the most of any stock and a big reason QQQ did not fall further.

• AMD — agreed an $8.2B all-stock deal to buy AI lab World Labs, with founder Fei-Fei Li joining — the stock fell 3.5% on $13.0B.

• TSLA — dropped on an analyst call — down 4.0% on $13.7B, the weakest of the mega caps.

• JEF — Q3 adjusted EPS of $1.09 beat the $0.93 estimate and sales of $2.22B beat $2.17B — the stock still fell 5.1% on 1.7 times normal volume, pulling financials lower.

• NVTS — selected by the U.S. government to develop next-generation 10kV silicon-carbide power chips — up 19.4% on $129M traded.

• GLND — hit by a short report calling it uninvestable at any price above zero — opened 7.2% lower and closed down 2.9% on $129M.

• XOM — an analyst says strong refining will drive Chevron and ExxonMobil third-quarter results — XOM rose 1.2% and CVX 0.9%, the core of energy's money inflow.

• BB — rallied after earnings — up 7.0% on about twice normal volume and $256M traded.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Health Care +0.60%, Consumer Staples +0.21%, Energy +0.15%

Lagging: Real Estate -0.51%, Utilities -0.53%, Materials -0.66%, Technology -0.91%, Industrials -0.97%, Financials -1.11%, Consumer Discretionary -1.41%, Communication Services -1.58%

Energy took the most money, about $2.2 billion into its fund, even though health care had the best percentage gain on half the dollars. Staples drew $1.1 billion and health care $1.0 billion — the defensive trade. Financials lost the most, about $2.1 billion on the JEF drop, with tech, industrials and utilities each losing about $1.3 billion. NVDA was the single biggest stock at $32.2 billion traded, more than double TSLA ($13.7 billion) or AMD ($13.0 billion), and the bearish chip fund SOXS drew $2.6 billion. Large orders net bought QQQ by $2.1 billion and SPY by $1.2 billion, reversing Friday's $574 million of SPY selling.

Post-Market Gappers

These are the regular-session movers; none of today's after-hours reporters (MTN, IDT, CHRN) shows an after-hours gap in the snapshot yet. The long side was thin and news-driven: NVTS rose 19.4% on a U.S. government chip contract and AMC 11.2% on 2.4 times normal volume, while MSGY gained 25.6% but spent the day falling from an 8.99 high to 3.93. The losers were mostly small caps breaking down, led by JEF (down 5.1% after a beat) and NCI (down 6.3% on nearly five times normal volume). The ETF leaderboard told the real story — bets against gold miners (GDXD +16.3%), silver (ZSL +11.4%) and chips (SOXS +6.7%) topped it.

Stocks in play

Only three names passed the day's volume and trend tests, and two are bets against the market: ZSL (+11.4%, short silver) and SOXS (+6.7%, short chips, $2.6B traded). PANW is the lone real stock, up 4.6% on $2.3B and sitting 0.05% under its tight-range breakout level at 392.09.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:35 AM ET

No changes since the 8:25 AM pre-market read.

Rates are driving the open: the 10-year yield sits at 5.18% and TLT is down 0.6% again, pulling gold down 2.8% and pressing chips like AMD. SPY is up 0.2% at 768.81, just above its 10-day average at 767.10 and its 21-day at 765.73, with Friday's range 766.29-772.28 framing the open. QQQ is 0.1% lower at 740.32, held up by MSFT (+3.3%) and NVDA on its record buyback, while IWM is down 0.35% at 280.67. The Dow fund DIA is the strongest index at +0.4% — value over growth, big over small.

Energy is taking the money: its fund has traded about $3.7 million pre-market, the most of any sector, and XOM and VLO closed Friday on $1.8 billion and $1.5 billion traded. Gold is losing it — GFI down 12%, GDXU down 13.9%, and inverse gold and silver funds GDXD (+14%) and ZSL (+8.9%) topping the gainers. Large orders sold SPY for a second day on Friday, about $570 million net out, while QQQ saw about $130 million net in. The chip hedge SOXS traded $2.2 billion, the heaviest name on the scan boards.

Underneath the green index, 2,488 stocks are down against 1,195 up, and 163 new lows outnumber 89 new highs. Only 1 in 3 stocks is above its 40-day average — oversold, which usually leads to a bounce within days once the lows stop expanding. Volatility is not confirming any stress: VIX is flat at 14.84, so this is repricing for higher rates rather than fear. Until the metals stop falling and small caps hold Friday's lows, bounces are for the mega caps only.

Takeaway:A green index over red internals — SPY 765.73, its 21-day average, is the line that decides whether the weakness spreads.
Morning10:33 AM ET

Since pre-market: ABNB and BKNG broke their 10:00 highs and are HIT; VLO is 1.3% away; CVX slipped just under its new buy level.

The pre-market lift is gone: SPY went from up 0.2% before the bell to 767.25, down 0.5%, sitting on its 10-day average and just above Friday's 766.29 low, with the 21-day at 765.90 below. QQQ is down 1.1% at 736.34, already under Friday's 739.64 low despite NVDA up 2.7%. IWM is down 0.5%, and rising yields are the common cause.

Money is leaving almost everywhere except oil: energy took about $550 million while financials lost $370 million and tech $305 million. Large orders net bought QQQ by about $160 million, mostly NVDA at $9.6 billion traded, while net selling SPY again. Gold and silver are being liquidated — GLD down 3.6%, GDXU down 12.8% on $145 million.

Underneath it is a rout: 7,275 stocks down against 2,074 up and 751 new lows against 110 highs. Only 1 in 3 stocks is above its 40-day average, oversold ground that usually bounces within days, but VIX up 6.7% says hedges are being bought now. Oil up and metals down makes this a rates repricing, not a panic.

Takeaway:Broad selling behind a thin index: SPY 765.90 is the line, and a close below it opens 761.06.
Midday12:33 PM ET

Since morning: VLO broke its 10:00 high at 11:08 on twice normal volume but has slipped back 1.6% under it.

Rates and Iran drive the day: bill auctions cleared higher at 11:30 AM, and Iran sanctions-relief reports at 12:22 PM took most of oil's gain. SPY is 767.80, down 0.5%, just above its 21-day average at 765.68. QQQ recovered to 738.55 from 736.34 but is still under Friday's 739.64 low; IWM is down 0.5%.

Money is running to defensives: health care drew $590 million and staples $470 million while financials lost $1.1 billion; energy, bought at 10:30, went flat as oil faded. NVDA is taking $17.6 billion alone, up 2.3%, and large orders net bought QQQ by $1.1 billion — big buyers are propping up the index, not the stocks under it. The heaviest selling sits in MDB and BE.

Underneath it is getting worse: new lows rose to 1,170 from 751 two hours ago, against 101 highs, and decliners lead four to one. Only 1 in 3 stocks is above its 40-day average, which usually precedes a bounce, but VIX is up 6.9% and metals keep falling with bonds — a rates repricing still in progress.

Takeaway:Stocks are breaking under a steady index: SPY 765.68 is the line, and a close below it opens 760.97.
Power hour2:33 PM ET

No changes since midday.

Rates are still the driver: bills cleared higher at 11:30 AM, TLT is down 1.0%, and Iran headlines kept oil from helping. SPY is 766.73, down 0.6%, under its 10-day average at 767.14 but above the 21-day at 765.87. QQQ is 737.60, still under Friday's 739.64 low; IWM is down 0.5%.

Energy is still the biggest money magnet at about $1.7 billion, while financials lost $1.4 billion. NVDA took $22.9 billion on its buyback while MDB, BE and ARM carry the heaviest selling. Large orders net bought SPY by $425 million and QQQ by $1.1 billion — big money is defending the index, not the stocks in it.

New lows eased from 1,170 at midday to 1,014 against 114 highs, but decliners still outnumber advancers three to one. Gold and silver falling with the VIX up 7.3% reads as a rates unwind, not panic. With 1 in 3 stocks above its 40-day average the market is oversold, which usually bounces within days once new lows shrink.

Takeaway:Large orders are holding up the index while three in four stocks fall; SPY 765.87 on the close decides it.
Closing4:33 PM ET

Since Power Hour: ABNB and BKNG slipped back under their buy levels into the close; CLRO bounced back above its dip level and is 1.2% away.

Rates drove the whole day: bill auctions cleared higher at 11:30 AM and gold, silver and bonds were sold together. SPY closed at 765.39, down 0.8%, just under its 21-day average at 765.72 and below Friday's 766.29 low — the level it had held at 2:30 PM gave way in the last hour. QQQ fell 1.1% to 736.50, still under Friday's 739.64 low but above its 10-day at 733.05, and IWM lost 0.7% to 280.08.

Energy took the money, about $2.2 billion, with staples and health care drawing another $2.2 billion between them, while financials lost $2.1 billion and tech, industrials and utilities about $1.3 billion each. NVDA traded $32.2 billion on its record buyback and closed up 1.7%, while TSLA and AMD lost 4.0% and 3.5% on about $13 billion each. Large orders net bought QQQ by $2.1 billion and SPY by $1.2 billion, up from $1.5 billion combined at 2:30 PM — big money bought the index harder into the close even as it fell.

Underneath, the selling spread: new lows climbed back to 1,161 from 1,014 at 2:30 PM against 106 highs, and nearly four stocks fell for every one that rose. VIX up 8.3% with gold down 4.0% is a rates unwind, not panic, and only 1 in 3 stocks is above its 40-day average — deep enough that a bounce usually comes within days. The catch is that large-order buying has kept the index from showing the damage; if that buying stops, the index catches down to the stocks.

Today's picks: ABNB broke out at 10:00 and BKNG at 10:10 but both closed back under their buy levels, BKNG 0.1% away and ABNB 0.6%; VLO broke out at 11:08 and finished 1.0% away. None hit its stop.

Takeaway:Stocks broke down while big orders held the index up; a SPY close back above 765.72 buys a bounce, a close under 764.66 opens 760.98.
