Selling under a flat index. A weak seven-year Treasury sale sent long bonds down 1.5%; nearly two stocks fell for each riser while SPY slipped 0.25%.
Volatility rose while gold fell: a rates repricing that oversold readings may not stop.
SPY 765.17 (its 21-day average) decides it: holding above with breadth this oversold usually bounces; a close below opens 760.36. Friday's 10:00 AM inflation print tests rates next.
A weak seven-year Treasury sale (5.085% vs 4.512%) sent long bonds down 1.5%. Oil rose while gold fell, so borrowing costs, not safety-seeking, drove stocks.

Energy took the most money, about $2.4 billion, not the percentage leader.
After hours AKAM leads four gainers and SCHL is down 10.1%; no earnings reporter is moving. Earlier, SRZN and P led.
Mostly speculative growth, much too stretched.

One auction did this. The five-year note cleared at 5.033% against 4.393% last time, which puts the belly of the curve above the ten-year and the two-year more than a full point above the Fed's own rate — the bond market pricing the opposite of cuts. Hot business surveys and the tightest jobless claims in months supplied the reason. Everything valued off that rate sold in order of duration: small caps hardest, then the Nasdaq, then the Dow, with Utilities and Real Estate going down alongside the bonds they trade like. Gold and silver were sold too, which is the tell — a genuine supply scare bids gold with crude, and this one crushed it.
Two things argue the other way. Volatility did not move at all while small caps were marked down over two percent, so nobody paid for protection into this, and QQQ remains above every moving average it owns while SPY stands on its 50-day alone. And the 4.8% crude move that drove the only green sector has no explanation anywhere in the fetched wire, against an inventory report that argued the opposite way. If that bid is a thin overnight print rather than an event, the sector table looks very different by ten o'clock.
Changed since PRE-MARKET TAPE: XOM WAIT to TRIGGERED at 162.12, CVX WAIT to WAIT at 207, FCX ARMED to FAILED at 71.86. The oil trade opened and worked, but only one of the two names held the level it needed, and the single position that was not an oil bet lost its floor inside the first hour. Two names dropped out of the scan without resolving.
The pre brief's central observation was that nobody had paid for protection into a two-percent markdown in small caps. Two hours later volatility is bid and gold and silver are still being sold — insurance bought against equities while the assets people buy when frightened get liquidated. That is a positioning unwind driven by the discount rate, not a flight to safety, which is why the damage is so much wider than the index. Claims at 197,000 and new home sales beating by ten percent removed what was left of the near-term cut case.
Changed since MORNING SESSION: CVX WAIT to TRIGGERED at 207, MPC WAIT to TRIGGERED at 398.90, CRM WAIT to WAIT at 242.09, HNGE ARMED to FAILED at 91.17. Every level that resolved upward was an oil name, and the one coil that was not oil broke its floor. Two names dropped out of the scan without resolving.
The morning brief said the crude bid had no explanation on the wire. It does now: the Strait of Hormuz is under a US blockade, and talks on a phased reopening crossed fourteen minutes before this snapshot. That one fact reorganises the session — it is why energy took the most money of any sector and why the refiners cleared their levels. What it does not explain is gold, silver and the miners all being sold on the day a chokepoint closed, with volatility still near the low end of its range. The market is pricing the reopening rather than the blockade.
Changed since MIDDAY MIX & ROTATION: CVX TRIGGERED to WAIT at 207, MPC TRIGGERED to WAIT at 398.90, VLO ARMED to WAIT at 392.09. All three oil levels slipped back under their triggers after the seven-year auction, leaving XOM TRIGGERED at 162.12 as the only one holding. One name dropped out of the scan without resolving.
The midday brief named the seven-year auction as the decider, and it decided against the bulls: it cleared more than half a point above last month's rate and long bonds fell almost a percent. Crude kept its blockade gain, yet the oil stocks gave back their levels, gold fell again and volatility rose — the afternoon was driven by the price of money, not the price of oil.
Since power hour: XOM slipped under its buy level; FCX and HNGE climbed back above their stops.
The auction set the close: bonds fell and selling stayed broad under a flat index. Oil held its gain; oil stocks did not.
Today's picks: XOM fell 2.1% under its level; CVX 1.2% away; CRM 1.0% away.
