Market regime
Assessment

Narrow bid, broad bleed — the Fed hiked to 4% Wednesday and lifted its whole projected path, so the rate-sensitive half of the market was sold while storage chips and crypto ran on their own separate news. Two stories are holding the index up, not an improving tape. Flips on a SPY close above 762.84.

Risk

Gold and silver were bought while volatility fell and Treasuries were sold. Gold normally falls when real yields rise, and falling volatility rules out a hedging bid, which leaves an inflation bid as the only reading left standing — and import prices running 7% above a year ago are what that bid is trading.

The number to weight is not today's advance-decline but the new-low count: 330 stocks made new lows against 123 new highs and only about a third of the market holds its 40-day line, a ratio that does not repair in a session. SPY closed a hair under its own 21-day average at 762.84; above it the narrow bid is carrying the tape, below it two crowded trades are.

Next

Both of today's engines ran on news that has already printed, so the risk is not that the themes are wrong but that the prices already contain them — SNDK EXTENDED (Sandisk, technology) sits nearly two days' range above its 21-day at 1596.77, where a stop becomes definable again. Size against the level, never against the theme.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

The driver is Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision, and the hike itself was the least of it. Rates went to 4% from 3.75% exactly as expected, but the committee's own projections moved up about half a point at every horizon — this year to 4.1% from 3.8%, next year to 4.1% from 3.6%, the year after to 3.9% from 3.4%. The market had priced the move. It had not priced the path.

The transmission shows up first in the bond market and then in whatever borrows. Two-year yields rose seven basis points on the decision while ten-year yields rose one, narrowing the gap between them to 0.27 — the bond market raised what it expects the Fed to do and left its long-run inflation view alone, which is the opposite of what the metals are saying. Ten-year yields at 5.01% are the highest since 2007, the 30-year mortgage rate went to 6.97% from 6.85%, builder sentiment fell to 32, and LEN missed its estimate into exactly that.

The cross-asset reading is where the day splits in two. Gold rose 0.84% and silver 1.73% while volatility fell 3.6% and Treasuries were sold — three things that do not normally happen together, because a metals bid with volatility falling cannot be a fear trade. Crude fell 1.31% on the same session, so it is not an energy-supply trade either. What is left is a currency and inflation trade, and import prices at 7% above a year ago plus a Philadelphia Fed prices-paid reading of 48.6 against 40.9 are the prints that support it. That read fails if ten-year yields close back under 5.01% without the metals giving anything back.

Key news & catalysts

Two catalysts, neither of them macro, account for most of what moved today.

The first is regulatory. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission proposed a crypto rule set and Bitcoin reclaimed 80,000 dollars, which lifted the entire crypto-linked equity complex — MSTR (Strategy, financials), COIN (Coinbase Global, financials), HOOD (Robinhood Markets, financials) and the miners all ran between 8% and 16%. That is a policy repricing, not a rates repricing, which is precisely why it could happen in the same week the Fed raised its path.

The second is the storage and memory bid. SNDK, STX (Seagate Technology, technology), WDC (Western Digital, technology), AMAT (Applied Materials, semiconductors) and LRCX (Lam Research, industrials) rose between 4% and 11% on AI storage demand, and volume supported the magnitude in every one of them. Both themes classify as confirmed: the turnover matched the move.

ACN (Accenture, technology) is the cleanest single-name catalyst on the tape — Accenture and Anthropic announced a commitment of one billion dollars each over five years to AI safety evaluation capacity, and the stock rose 6.2% on more than twice normal turnover. LLY (Eli Lilly, health care) won FDA approval for Inluriyo with Verzenio in ER-positive, HER2-negative, ESR1-mutated advanced breast cancer and closed up 0.14%, which tells you the approval was already in the price.

One large move has no explanation in any fetched source: HGV (Hilton Grand Vacations, consumer discretionary) rose 38% on 2.4 times average volume. A move that size on participation that ordinary is unconfirmed, and until the reason reaches the tape there is no level to work against.

Conviction setups

STX TRIGGERED — trigger 832.98; while price holds above 832.98 the reclaim stays live and the path runs toward 1127.99, and a close below 780.36 ends it.

MRK WAIT — trigger 147.84; a close above 147.84 on turnover like today's turns the pullback into a trend resumption toward 156.92, and a close below 144.05 ends it.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Technology +1.01%, Industrials +0.44%

Lagging: Financials -0.04%, Health Care -0.13%, Energy -0.23%, Consumer Discretionary -0.32%, Consumer Staples -0.83%, Real Estate -0.95%, Utilities -1.20%, Communication Services -1.34%, Materials -1.42%

Only two sectors closed green, and the one that gained most was not the one that took the most money in: Industrials drew more money than Technology while gaining less than half as much. The percentage leader is not the money leader, which means the technology gain is concentrated in a few names rather than spread across the sector.

The biggest money move of the day was not a gain at all. Financials saw more money change hands than any other sector and finished flat — the most heavily traded corner of the market went nowhere in the week the Fed raised its path, which is the market declining to take a side on what higher rates do to bank margins.

The single stock that took the most money today was Nvidia, at roughly 39.6 billion dollars, and it rose 1.2%. Sandisk took about three-quarters as much and rose almost 11%. When the largest pool of money in the market barely moves while the second largest runs double digits, money is not chasing the theme — it is rotating inside one it already owns.

The bottom of the board is the Fed's signature: utilities, real estate and consumer staples, the three sectors that trade like bonds, all finished red and none was rescued by a green index. That pairing holds the regime read together, and it breaks if ten-year yields close back below 5.01% — at which point those three go back to work and the tape broadens without the index having to move at all.

Post-Market Gappers

No distinct after-hours mover is identifiable in today's data. The only company scheduled to report today is VFS, and no result has posted — so every name below moved during the regular session and the list reads as a closing-print ranking, not an after-hours one.

The gainers divide cleanly into the session's two themes plus one name belonging to neither. The losers are the opposite of a theme — small banks, small biotech and micro-caps — which is exactly what a broad, shallow decline looks like from the bottom of the board rather than the top.

The tell is in the leveraged trackers. The two-times short Sandisk product fell 21.7% on more than half a billion dollars and the two-times inverse MSTR product fell 32.3%. Real money was positioned against both of today's winners, which is part of why the moves ran as far as they did — and it is the same crowding that makes chasing them at these prices the wrong side of the trade.

Stocks in play

Fourteen of the twenty carry A grades, and the concentration is the story: the qualifying list is crypto-linked financials and storage semiconductors, with almost nothing else clearing the filter. A scan universe this narrow on a day with 330 new lows is the breadth problem restated from the other end.

Three of the twenty are leveraged trackers on names already in the list. That happens when a theme gets crowded enough that its derivatives out-score ordinary stocks, and it is a late-stage signal rather than an early one.

HOOD ARMED tops the board on a perfect score with its trigger at 125.25 — through that level this becomes a new high for the move, and a close below 109.80 ends the reversal outright.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:32 AM ET

No prior brief available for reconciliation.

The driver is Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision, and specifically the projections rather than the rate. The committee raised to 4.00% and simultaneously moved its expected path up at every horizon, which is a signal it thinks it has more work to do. The market's answer has been to bid silver hardest of anything on the screen, gold close behind, and to sell the banks — a set of moves that only make sense together if you think a 4% policy rate does not catch an inflation running with import prices 7% above a year ago.

Underneath the index the tape is much narrower than it looks. QQQ is above every moving average it has while SPY holds only its 50-day at 758.50, only about a third of stocks trade above their 40-day line, and the past week's gains and declines are split almost evenly. The heaviest money in the market went into NVDA and moved it less than a quarter of a percent. Meanwhile every clean base in the scan sits in fertiliser, pipelines and pharmaceuticals — the structure and the money are in different places.

Takeaway:A narrow, well-funded advance in technology sitting on top of a flat market, with the metals pricing a Fed that is behind. SPY holds only its 50-day at 758.50: reclaiming 762.96 broadens the advance, losing 758.50 ends it. The three levels worth watching are MRK at 147.65, PAA at 26.39 and CF at 141.66.
Morning10:32 AM ET

Changed since PRE-MARKET TAPE: MRK ARMED to WAIT at 147.65, NVDA ARMED to WAIT at 219.91. Both of the market's nearest levels traded inside the first hour and neither was held, which is the session in two prices — the bids exist, they just cannot keep what they take. Two names dropped out of the scan without resolving.

The driver since the pre brief is the nine-fifteen and ten o'clock data. Factory output and the leading index both came in below estimate — the first soft readings since Wednesday's rate rise — and the bond market sold anyway, which is why rate-sensitive sectors are the worst on the board and why the damage shows up in the count of stocks rather than in the index. Money did not leave; it concentrated, into semiconductors and into almost every bitcoin-linked financial listed, while inverse crypto trackers lost between ten and eighteen percent. MSTR WAIT reclaimed 144.92 and slipped back beneath it — the third time this morning a level has been taken and given straight back.

Takeaway:Three of the market's nearest levels traded this morning and none of them held, so this is a tape that offers entries and then withdraws them. Everything rests on the 50-day average at 758.53: above it this is rotation into semiconductors and crypto, below it the narrow bid is all that holds the index up.
Midday12:32 PM ET

Changed since MORNING SESSION: CF ARMED to FAILED at 130.00, MSTR WAIT to TRIGGERED at 144.92. The two moves are the session in miniature — the one name with a clean base in an unloved sector lost its level, while the most crowded trade on the board finally held one it had already dropped twice this morning. Two names dropped out of the scan without resolving.

The driver since the morning brief is not a new print — nothing has published since ten o'clock — but a change in whether levels stick. All morning the tape offered triggers and took them back; this hour the crypto-linked complex stopped giving them back, with Strategy's chief executive ruling out any end to its bitcoin buying and the tracker complex repricing around it. Underneath, nothing improved: nearly three stocks still fall for every one that rises, and only about a third of the market holds its 40-day line. The money is not leaving, it is compressing — and the sharpest measure of that is Sandisk out-trading Nvidia in dollars today.

Takeaway:The tape has stopped handing levels back, but only inside two themes — everything outside storage and crypto is still being sold quietly and in size. Everything rests on the 50-day average at 758.52: above it this is relocation, below it the narrow bid is the only thing holding the index up.
Power hour2:32 PM ET

Changed since MIDDAY MIX & ROTATION: AMAT ARMED to FAILED at 420.24. It was the only name on the list with a base outside the two crowded themes, so losing it makes the bid narrower rather than weaker — the two levels that did hold, one in storage and one in crypto, both extended their cushion this hour. Four names dropped out of the scan without resolving.

The driver this hour arrived as a headline rather than a print. A report that the Iran war has cost more American lives than the Pentagon has disclosed hit the tape at half past two, tagged to the index itself, and the three things that should have moved on it did the opposite: crude fell, volatility fell, and bonds were sold. A market that believed in a supply threat buys oil first; this one sold it, which means the afternoon is still being driven by the rate path and by positioning, not by the Middle East. Underneath, the compression continued — the crypto-linked complex and the storage complex took nearly every dollar that moved, the inverse trackers on those same names fell by double digits, and large institutional lots put a net thirteen and a half billion dollars into the index while small money sold. The count and the cash have not disagreed this sharply all week.

Takeaway:Two themes are absorbing the money and a third just lost its level, so the bid is narrower into the close than it was at midday, not stronger. Everything still rests on a SPY close above 758.56: above it this is relocation, below it the only thing holding the index up is a one-day squeeze in the most crowded corner of the tape.
Closing4:32 PM ET

Changed since POWER HOUR: NVDA WAIT to TRIGGERED at 219.91, IREN WAIT to TRIGGERED at 45.93, AMAT FAILED to EXTENDED at 420.24, COIN WAIT to FAILED at 180.86. Three levels resolved upward into the bell and the fourth broke on a session low printed long before its trigger was tagged to the tick at 196.21 and rejected, so the last ninety minutes repaired more than they broke. Three names dropped out of the scan without resolving.

Scorecard: 3 triggered (NVDA at 219.91, IREN at 45.93, STX at 832.98), 1 failed (COIN at 180.86), 2 still armed (HOOD, NTNX), 2 extended (AMAT, SNDK), and 1 waiting on a close through its level (MRK at 147.84).

The pattern is lopsided in a way the index level hides. Every level that resolved upward today sits inside one of two themes, and the one that failed sits in the same neighbourhood as the ones that worked. Nothing outside storage and crypto triggered at all — the market did not broaden today, it deepened a single trade, and it did so while 330 stocks made new lows. Into Monday that makes the index the wrong thing to watch first. SPY closed a hair under its 21-day at 762.84: above it the narrow bid is carrying the whole tape and the new-low count should start falling, below it two crowded trades are propping up a market that 330 stocks have already left.

Takeaway:The index closed green on two news stories — a crypto rule proposal and the AI storage bid — while 330 stocks made new lows and the Fed's projected rate path moved up half a point at every horizon. Watch a SPY close above 762.84: above it the narrow bid is real, below it two crowded trades are holding up a market that is already leaving.
Summary
Watchlist

IREN TRIGGERED — trigger 45.93; above 45.93 there is no overhead structure at all until 61.28, and a close below 42.13 breaks the trend that got it here.

NVDA TRIGGERED (Nvidia, semiconductors) — trigger 219.91; the level was reclaimed and held into the close, so above 222.73 the largest money pool in the market starts leading again, while a close below 218.03 says today's turnover was supply.

HOOD ARMED — trigger 125.25; through 125.25 this is a new high for the move, and a close below 109.80 ends the reversal outright.

NTNX ARMED (Nutanix, technology) — trigger 70.48; through 70.48 the coil resolves toward 74.42, and a close below 67.60 says the base failed rather than paused.

AMAT EXTENDED (Applied Materials, semiconductors) — trigger 420.24; the break the power brief flagged was repaired above 437.40, but price is now more than a day's range past the level, so the 21-day at 456.83 is the next place risk is definable.

Traps

COIN FAILED (Coinbase Global, financials) — the failing number is the 177.67 session low, beneath the 180.86 invalidation the power brief published; an 11.6% close does not repair it, and 196.21 was tagged to the tick and rejected.

IMCC (IM Cannabis) — the failing number is turnover at roughly fifteen hundred times normal against a 3.74 close, with the session high at 8.65; more than half the day's range was handed back inside one session.

TNMG (TNL Mediagene) — the failing number is the 5.03 session high against a 3.80 close on 27 times normal volume; a second day of giving back the high is a distribution pattern, not a base.

LRCX FAILED — the failing number is the 272.64 session low, beneath the 280.87 level that defines the setup, on a day the stock closed up 7.0%. A green close does not repair a broken low; only a close back above the 21-day at 295.28 does.

Tomorrow

Monday 6:30 AM ET: Goolsbee speaks, the first official comment since the projections moved up half a point at every horizon. 8:30 AM ET: Chicago Fed national activity, prior -0.08.

Tuesday 1:00 PM ET: two-year note auction against a prior 4.204% with the two-year now at 4.74%, and Williams, Jefferson and Barkin all speaking. This is the first real test of whether the higher path is funded.

Wednesday 9:45 AM ET: purchasing managers' indices, the week's only high-impact prints — manufacturing expected 53.6 from 53.9, services 56.0 from 56.5.

Thursday 8:30 AM ET: jobless claims expected 202,000 against 196,000. Above roughly 210,000 the labour market stops supporting the hawkish path.

Friday 10:00 AM ET: consumer inflation expectations, prior 4.6%. Either it validates the metals bid or it ends it.

Armed levels into Monday: HOOD ARMED at 125.25, NTNX ARMED at 70.48, WDC ARMED at 451.49 and ANET ARMED (Arista Networks, technology) at 204.91 — each needs a close through its level on volume, and each fails on a close back beneath its stop. MRK WAIT at 147.84 is the nearest unresolved level on the board.

The index line remains a SPY close above 762.84, its 21-day average; below it the 50-day at 758.63 is the next place the broad decline reaches the index itself.
