Market regime
Assessment

Rotation under a red tape — a consumer credit print at 3:00 PM came in half again above estimate, pushing the rate-cut path out, and the money left banks and health care for semiconductors and oil rather than for cash. Two-thirds of stocks fell, but the damage is shallow. Flips on a SPY close below 763.78.

Risk

What held is as specific as what broke: the index carrying semiconductors closed above all four of its daily averages while the broad index lost two, and just over half the market is still above its intermediate average despite two-thirds of stocks falling. The reason to distrust the green in the leadership is that none of it held — every leadership name that reached the level named for it today closed back underneath. A session where every high is sold is a supply day dressed as a leadership day.

Next

Nothing triggered and held today, so every level carried forward is a reference the tape has already touched and given back rather than a fresh one. The one name today's tape never reached is AVGO ARMED (Broadcom, semiconductors) at 373.62, which makes it the single clean setup into tomorrow.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

The driver of the closing hour was the 3:00 PM consumer credit print, and it is the one number no card on this page shows. Households borrowed 18.06 billion dollars against an 11.70 billion estimate — half again more than forecast, and well above the 14.17 billion prior. Borrowing that heavy is evidence that consumption is being funded rather than cut, which pushes the rate-cut path out and makes every long-duration asset worth slightly less.

The cross-asset confirmation is unusually clean and it says this was not fear. Gold fell 1.77% while volatility rose 7.57%. Those two normally move together when the market is frightened; when they split like this the move is about discount rates, not risk. Long bonds agreeing settles it: they finished flat while stocks fell more than half a percent, so nobody was buying safety — there was simply less money willing to pay up for duration.

That transmission shows up exactly where it should. Banks were the largest money outflow of any sector, and the index that carries them finished worst of the four majors, down 1.16% against a 0.18% loss for the index that carries semiconductors. It also stacks with the 1:00 PM three-year auction, which cleared eighteen basis points above the prior sale.

The one thing the data does not explain is oil, up 3.29% and the reason energy led. No headline in any fetched source accounts for it, and the weekly inventory number does not arrive until Wednesday morning — so the largest sector inflow of the day is currently a move without a stated cause, which is a reason to hold it loosely. If SPY closes below 763.78 the rate story stops being a rotation and starts being a de-rating.

Key news & catalysts

Health care lost 2.40% because of clinical readouts, not because of anything macro, and that distinction matters: the sector's loss carries no information about the regime. Novartis trial failures rippled through its partners — the stock fell 13.49% on 4.66 times normal volume with roughly 1.4 billion dollars traded, and DYN (Dyne Therapeutics, health care) fell 15.98% on a myotonic dystrophy trial flop that was Novartis's, not its own. That is contagion by association, and it is the cleanest example on the board of a company being marked down for someone else's data.

GPCR FAILED (Structure Therapeutics, health care, weight-loss pills) is the day's most instructive reversal: the headline said its clinical data advanced the programme, and the stock still broke 44.31 and closed at 40.77 after touching 47.38, finishing 14% below its own high. When a positive readout gets sold that hard, the market is telling you the data was already priced. It would need to reclaim 47.38 on above-average volume to mean anything again.

The counterweight was ROIV (Roivant Sciences, health care), up 19.01% on roughly a billion dollars of turnover on rare lung disease data described as robust — confirmed by volume at 2.91 times normal, unlike most of today's large movers. So the same catalyst class produced a 19% gain and a 16% loss in the same session, which is what a binary-event day looks like and why the sector average understates the dispersion underneath it.

Outside health care, INTC (Intel, semiconductors) moved on a million-wafer milestone using ASML's next-generation technology, and LITE (Lumentum) ran 10.98% on optical demand. The nuclear complex also moved without appearing in any scanner: the leveraged trackers on SMR (NuScale) and OKLO (Oklo) gained more than 25% and lost more than 28% on their long and short sides respectively, implying roughly a 14% move in the underlying that no scanner list surfaced.

Conviction setups

INTC WAIT — trigger 106.09, which it printed and lost today; above it on turnover holding past 1.0 the 142.35 prior swing high is more than six stop-widths of runway, and a close below 100.25 ends the gap.

BE WAIT — trigger 283.83, reached and given back; above it the 351.28 prior swing high sits about 2.6 stop-widths up, and below 257.69 the power-demand bid is discounted.

LRCX WAIT — trigger 321.77 and price finished a tenth of a percent under it, the closest untraded level on the board; above it there is nothing overhead until 438.50, and below 305.90 the uptrend loses its base.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Energy +1.17%, Utilities +0.86%, Technology +0.37%

Lagging: Real Estate -0.07%, Industrials -0.42%, Communication Services -0.42%, Consumer Staples -0.66%, Consumer Discretionary -0.68%, Materials -0.93%, Financials -1.29%, Health Care -2.40%

Energy took in the most money of any sector today, roughly 1.8 billion dollars, and it also led on percentage — so for once the top of the board is funded rather than decorative. Utilities came second on percentage but drew less than half what energy did, which is what a defensive bid looks like when nobody is actually committing to it.

More money left financials than entered any sector on the day, about 2.2 billion dollars, and health care gave up nearly as much. That pairing is the session: banks were sold for the rate path and drug companies were sold for trial results, two unrelated reasons that happened to land together and made the tape look worse than the leadership did.

The single stock that took the most money today was Tesla, roughly 18 billion dollars, and it closed beneath its own session high like everything else that led. If SPY holds 763.78 the read stays rotation; below it the energy bid is the only funded thing left and the sell-off stops being selective.

Post-Market Gappers

The gainer board is almost entirely unfunded. The four largest percentage moves came from micro-caps with no named catalyst between them, and one of them, SWVL FAILED (Swvl Holdings), took out its 5.48 stop while printing a 30% gain on a fifth of a normal day's volume — a quote, not a transaction. The exceptions are ROIV, up 19.01% on a billion dollars of genuine turnover behind real trial data, and FCEL FAILED (FuelCell Energy, industrials), which reversed 18.66% but traded through 15.93 earlier in the session.

The loser board is the more informative half, because four of its ten names are leveraged short trackers on today's winners rather than companies that fell. Strip those out and what is left is concentrated: three health-care names on clinical data, one lithium producer, and FCUV (Focus Universal, industrials), down 65.24% after gapping 52% lower, which no fetched source explains.

The session's real signal is not on either list. Every leadership name that printed a new high today closed beneath it, so the day produced no held breakout in either direction — the buying and the selling both faded into the print.

Stocks in play

What is in play is narrow and it is all one theme. The highest-scoring names are AI infrastructure and semiconductors — CRWV (CoreWeave, technology), LITE, INTC, AXTI (AXT, semiconductors), BE (Bloom Energy, industrials) — and the two leveraged trackers that also qualify are trackers on names already in the list, which tells you the breadth of the theme is narrower than the row count suggests.

Turnover mostly confirms the moves at the large end and not at the small end. BE at 2.12 times normal and ROIV at 2.91 are transacted; INTC, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, semiconductors) and CRWV all cleared normal volume. Below that the list thins into names moving on nothing.

The uncomfortable pairing is that a breakout-heavy list surfaced on a day when two-thirds of stocks fell. That combination resolves against the breakouts more often than not, which is why the levels here are worth more as tomorrow's references than as tonight's conclusions.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:32 AM ET

No prior brief available for reconciliation.

The tape is running two unrelated events at once. Pharma trial failures at NVS are pulling DIA down 1.30% while QQQ holds +0.25%, and simultaneously the U.S. government is taking equity positions in quantum computing - RGTI at $100 million definitive, QBTS at up to $100 million - which is repricing that group on policy rather than earnings. Neither event touches the other, and neither is a macro print.

What argues against reading the red index as risk-off: VIX at 14.49 is falling, GLD is down 1.70% and SLV down 1.55%. Hedges are being sold, not bought. The pressure that matters is Thursday's PPI at a 0.4% monthly estimate against 0.0% previous and Friday's CPI at 0.4% against 0.1% - and with core CPI held at 0.2%, today's USO +2.40% is a direct input to that headline rather than a separate story.

Takeaway:ACT TODAY: HOG, RGTI, AMD. Those are the three closest levels to trading, at 0.9%, 1.2% and 1.5% from trigger - not the three best ideas, which sit further away in conviction. With daily CHOP at 62.3 and nothing on the momentum board holding 2R of clear air, the tape rewards waiting for a level to print over anticipating it.
Morning10:32 AM ET

Changed since PRE-MARKET TAPE: QBTS ARMED to WAIT at 18.24, TVTX ARMED to FAILED at 65.37, EE ARMED to FAILED at 38.84, AMD WAIT to TRIGGERED at 475.50, HNGE ARMED to UNKNOWN at 95.57, NWL ARMED to UNKNOWN at 6.30, EVTC ARMED to UNKNOWN at 31.08, RGTI WAIT to UNKNOWN at 16.19, and 3 others. Both broken invalidations were long setups in sectors that were working — EE failed while Energy led the market — and the three UNKNOWNs are the entire prior Top Trades list, dropped from the scan universe when the screens re-ran at 10:22 AM ET.

The driver since the open is a share-shift inside semiconductors rather than a bid for them: NVDA is down on the largest dollar turnover in the market while INTC WAIT, QCOM FAILED, AVGO (Broadcom, semiconductors) and SKHY are up 4% or more on a fraction of it — and Technology as a sector is up 0.11%, the arithmetic proof that money changed seats instead of arriving. Underneath, the pharma unwind broadened from NVS FAILED alone to DYN FAILED and BEAM FAILED. The long end did not move, so none of this is a rate story yet; Friday's CPI is.

Takeaway:ACT TODAY: QBTS, LITE, CRWV. Those are the three closest levels at 0.3%, 0.5% and 0.7% from trigger, and none is a Top Trade — proximity and conviction point in different directions this morning. Every leader triggers at its own high on sub-0.5 relative volume, so the only thing worth watching is whether turnover expands.
Midday12:32 PM ET

Changed since MORNING SESSION: QBTS WAIT to TRIGGERED at 18.23, IREN WAIT to TRIGGERED at 48.05, INTC WAIT to TRIGGERED at 103.24, NBIS WAIT to TRIGGERED at 242.89, HOG ARMED to FAILED at 28.86, LITE WAIT to TRIGGERED at 933.23, CRWV WAIT to EXTENDED at 96.55, AMD TRIGGERED to EXTENDED at 475.50, and 2 others. Every level the morning brief called too close to its session high to be worth anticipating traded and held, and the one name genuinely armed above a base is the one that broke.

The driver since 10:50 AM ET is two hyperscaler capex confirmations in one morning - Azure at a $100 billion annualized pace, and Qualcomm's CFO naming a second hyperscaler beyond Amazon - repricing optical, memory, power and neocloud together rather than in sequence. That is how SPY falls 0.40% while five leadership levels clear. The money came out of health care, down 2.39% on the largest sector dollar volume on the board. The buying arrived on 0.45x to 0.90x relative volume and the selling on 3.38x and 4.34x: the advance is unconfirmed, the liquidation is not.

Takeaway:ACT TODAY: INTC, KO, NBIS. The tape is concentrating rather than rising - 4,083 advancers against 6,038 decliners, new lows past new highs, twelve of twenty base setups stopped out while the momentum board prints session highs. Flips on a SPY close below 766.17.
Power hour2:32 PM ET

Changed since MIDDAY MIX & ROTATION: QBTS TRIGGERED to UNKNOWN at 18.23, HOG FAILED to UNKNOWN at 27.61, DYN FAILED to UNKNOWN at 24.99, EE FAILED to UNKNOWN at 38.82. All four left the scan universe rather than moving, so the health-care and energy liquidation the midday brief built its caution around stopped expanding without being resolved - while INTC, NBIS and BE each printed a new high through the exact level that brief named and each sits back beneath the re-marked one.

The driver since 12:53 PM ET is the 1:00 PM three-year note auction, cleared at 4.474% against a 4.291% prior. Eighteen basis points of concession is a duration bill, paid by the index that carries the banks: DIA -0.98% against QQQ +0.10%, with Morgan Stanley's block re-rating of the regional banks landing the same session. VIX +5.37% with GLD -1.21% confirms the character - volatility bid while gold is sold is a discount-rate move, not a fear move, and it leaves the AI capex complex untouched because its bid is a capex story.

Takeaway:ACT TODAY: KO, BE, STX. With 88 minutes left every leadership trigger is its own session high and re-marks on each scan, so those three are the only levels that can be anticipated into the close. Flips on a SPY close below 766.16.
Closing4:33 PM ET

Changed since POWER HOUR: LITE TRIGGERED to FAILED at 904.38, AMD EXTENDED to FAILED at 489.99, CRWV EXTENDED to TRIGGERED at 96.55, FCEL ARMED to FAILED at 15.93. KO WAIT traded through 88.44 and STX WAIT through 921.13 in the final hour and both closed back underneath, which is the shape of the whole session: every level the tape reached, it gave back. IREN and CHEF dropped out of the scan without resolving.

Scorecard: 5 failed (LITE at 904.38, AMD at 489.99, GPCR at 44.31, NUR at 5.07, SWVL at 5.48), 1 still armed (AVGO). Nothing triggered and held. The eight names still waiting — INTC, BE, LRCX, TSLA, KO, STX, NBIS, MARA — all closed beneath their own session highs, so every level carried into tomorrow is one the market reached today and declined to pay for.

A day with no held breakout in either direction, on a macro driver that was about discount rates rather than risk, is a market repricing what it will pay for duration rather than one deciding to leave. The evidence is that gold was sold while volatility rose and long bonds went nowhere — there was no flight to safety, just less money for anything priced off a rate cut. That keeps the read rotational into tomorrow, and health care's 2.40% loss should be discounted entirely, since it came from clinical trial results that say nothing about the economy. What changes it is SPY closing below 763.78, which would put the broad index under three averages at once and turn a shallow wide decline into a de-rating.

Takeaway:ACT TODAY: none. Every leadership level printed and failed to hold into the close, so tomorrow opens with references the market has already rejected once — AVGO ARMED at 373.62 is the only level today's tape never reached. Flips on a SPY close below 763.78.
Summary
Watchlist

AVGO ARMED — trigger 373.62, the only level on this page today's tape never reached; reclaiming it puts price back above its 21-day average, and below 360.21 the reversal attempt is finished.

TSLA WAIT (Tesla, electric vehicles) — trigger 370.00, which took more money today than any other single stock and still closed under; above it the 432.86 prior swing high is roughly 3.6 stop-widths away, below 352.73 it rejoins the downtrend.

KO WAIT (Coca-Cola, consumer staples) — trigger 88.55; it traded through 88.44 in the last hour and closed back beneath, and with the 10-day at 88.75 immediately above, clearing 88.55 buys almost no room. Below 86.33 the pullback is void.

STX WAIT (Seagate Technology, technology) — trigger 925.44; the level traded and was lost, and the day's low came within a fraction of the 856.75 line that would end it. Above 925.44 there is over three stop-widths to the 1145.00 prior swing high.

NBIS WAIT (Nebius Group) — trigger 254.74, printed and faded; clearing it on turnover past 1.0 would mean the contract news is underwritten rather than read, and below 231.36 there was no bid underneath.

MARA WAIT (MARA Holdings, fintech) — trigger 12.06 with over three stop-widths clear to the 16.43 prior swing high; relative strength of 20 is the weakest on this list, and below 10.84 it is a downtrend again.

Traps

LITE FAILED — the 904.38 line broke at an 884.70 low even though the stock closed up 10.98%, which means the level sat inside a 115-point session range and was never a usable floor.

AMD FAILED — the 489.99 session-range floor broke at a 486.57 low while the stock closed up 5.71%; a name can lead the tape and still take out everyone positioned beneath it.

GPCR FAILED — closed 40.77 against a 47.38 high, 14% below its own high on data the headline called an advance.

NUR FAILED (Nuran Wireless) — 2.45 against a 7.72 session high on 15.75 times normal volume, 68% below the high it made today.

SWVL FAILED — a 5.05 low took out the 5.48 stop on 0.21 relative volume; the 30% gain was set on a fifth of a normal day.

Tomorrow

AVGO ARMED at 373.62 is the only name carried into tomorrow whose level today's tape never reached — every other level below was touched and given back.

Levels carried unfilled, each reached and given back today: LRCX WAIT at 321.77, KO WAIT at 88.55, TSLA WAIT at 370.00, INTC WAIT at 106.09, MARA WAIT at 12.06, BE WAIT at 283.83, STX WAIT at 925.44, NBIS WAIT at 254.74.

Wednesday 10:30 AM ET: EIA crude inventories, a 4.45mn draw prior. Energy was the only sector whose gain was funded; a build removes the reason it led.

Wednesday 1:00 PM ET: 10-Year Note Auction, 4.683% prior. Another tail like today's three-year widens the gap between DIA and QQQ rather than closing it.

Thursday 8:30 AM ET: PPI +0.4% expected against 0.0% prior, core +0.3% against 0.2%, claims 205k. ORCL and ADBE report the same morning.

Friday 8:30 AM ET: CPI +0.4% expected against 0.1% prior, core +0.2%. The week's only high-impact release, and at or above estimate it hits today's longest-duration winners first.
