Neutral5 tape phases
Market regime
Assessment

The session resolved a direct contradiction inside a single 10:00 AM print. ISM Services came in at 55.4 against a 54.3 estimate with new orders accelerating to 60.9 from 57.2 — an unambiguous growth beat — while the same report's employment sub-index sat at 47.8, in contraction, and prices paid rose to 72.6 from 70.3. Layer on ADP at 38,000 against a 47,000 estimate and Challenger layoffs jumping 58% month-over-month to 52,881, and the tape got exactly what it wanted: demand intact, hiring broken, so the cut case survives a strong growth print. That is why SPY added 0.97% and DIA 1.13% rather than selling a hot services number.

The cross-asset signature is where the read gets specific. GLD rose 1.77% and SLV 2.35% while VIX fell 6.05% to 14.28 and TLT managed only 0.15%. Gold bid with volatility collapsing is not a fear hedge, and gold bid with duration flat is not a rate-cut bond rally — it is real-asset demand against a 72.6 services prices print that caps the long end. Silver outrunning gold by 58 basis points adds an industrial leg the fear story cannot explain.

The structure argues with the move. QQQ finished at 717.67 against a 21-day average of 717.57 — one hundredth of a percent of clearance — and remains beneath its 5-week at 720.33. SPY at 773.15 clears both its 21-day at 769.17 and its 5-week at 771.56. A 1.12% Nasdaq rally that ends flush on its own average is a reclaim attempt, not a trend resumption, and the index that led on percentage is the one with the weaker structure.

Risk

Breadth and trend disagree on the timeframe that matters. Advancers ran 70.5% of the tape with a 2.39 advance-decline ratio, yet T2108 sits at 49.5 — precisely half the 10,375-name universe above its 40-day average — and the four-day cumulative momentum reading is 1,216 up against 1,036 down, a 1.17 ratio near equilibrium. One strong session inside four balanced ones is a surge, not accumulation. IWM gaining 0.36% against DIA at 1.13% widens the same gap by 77 basis points at the index level.

More telling, the choppiness reading rose on an up day: the blended figure moved from 48.43 to 51.95, with the SPY leg jumping from 49.66 to 56.66. Directional days compress that measure; this one expanded it, meaning the 1% gain was assembled from non-trending internals. Nonfarm payrolls Friday at 8:30 ET carries a 56,000 estimate against a prior month of -23,000, so the entire labor thesis reprices in one print.

Next

Constructive while SPY holds 769.17 and QQQ holds 717.57 on a closing basis; a loss of either reverts the read to the balanced four-day internals rather than today's advance-decline. The 8:30 ET payrolls print is the binary — a miss below 56,000 confirms the cut case the tape already bought, while a print above it forces the 72.6 services prices reading back into the front of the curve.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

The driver was the 10:00 ET ISM Services release and its internal split. Headline 55.4 beat the 54.3 estimate and reversed a two-month slide from 54.1, new orders surged to 60.9 from 57.2, but employment printed 47.8 in contraction and prices paid climbed to 72.6 from 70.3. The transmission is sector-specific: strong demand with no hiring supports cyclicals and the front of the curve, while a 72.6 prices reading is precisely what keeps the long end pinned — which is why TLT managed 0.15% on a day equities added a full percent.

Rates argue against the simple dovish read. The 10-year sits at 4.79% and the 2-year at 4.39%, both up four to five basis points into the print, holding a 40 basis point spread against an effective fed funds rate of 3.63%. Yields rising while GLD adds 1.77% and SLV 2.35% isolates the metals bid as real-asset demand rather than a duration trade — a distinction that matters because a duration-driven gold rally would have dragged TLT with it.

The labor evidence accumulated all week and all of it pointed one way: ADP at 38,000 versus 47,000 estimated, Challenger layoffs at 52,881 against 33,429 prior, continuing claims at 1,779,000 and the four-week claims average creeping to 207,250 from 205,750. Unit labor costs at 1.2% against a 1.3% estimate removes the wage-inflation objection to easing.

Tariffs surfaced as a named margin problem rather than a headline: TTC disclosed that tariffs and commodity inflation are absorbing its cost savings, which is the mechanism by which a 72.6 services prices print becomes an earnings problem two quarters out rather than a rates problem tomorrow. The read invalidates on a payrolls print above 56,000 with average hourly earnings at or above the 0.3% estimate — that combination revives the wage channel and puts the long end back in charge.

Key news & catalysts

The largest moves of the day were not in the companies that moved — they were in the trackers. SMST, a 2x short MSTR product, fell 34.6%; BMNZ, 2x short BMNR, fell 28.7%; CONI, 2x short COIN, fell 19.8%; and CRCA, 2x long CRCL, gained 33.7%. Backing out the leverage, the underlying crypto-equity complex moved roughly 10% to 17% higher, confirmed directly by MSTR at plus 17.34% on 6.06B of dollar volume, HOOD at plus 16.67% on 6.21B, BMNR at plus 14.26%, CIFR at plus 14.10% and MARA at plus 10.70%. This was the session's largest coordinated flow and no sector card captures it, because these names scatter across Financials, Technology and Other.

CHPT is the cleanest mechanical story on the tape: plus 75.7% on 16.8x average turnover after a Q2 double beat, against short interest of 36.75% on a 25.9M share float. The magnitude is squeeze, not revaluation — price closed 51% above its 21-day average while still 27.6% below its own prior swing high, and relative strength of 3 places it in the bottom 3% of the market through the trend window. Volume fully confirms the move; structure fully contradicts it.

RARE is the day's largest destruction of value, down 44.2% on 7.5x turnover and 393M of dollar volume after disappointing Phase 3 results forced a cost-reduction program — a confirmed, event-driven repricing with no ambiguity. On the other side, SMMT added 17.8% on partner data showing ivonescimab outperforming in lung cancer, but on only 2.4x relative volume against an 11.65B market capitalisation. For a datapoint of that clinical weight, 2.4x is thin participation and marks the move unconfirmed relative to its claim.

Two names deserve a caution flag on mechanics rather than fundamentals. SGLD shows a 21.9% decline on 0.48x relative volume with a 97.3% average true range — that is post-listing giveback after a 180% Nasdaq debut, not distribution. PSQL fell 20.0% on 0.84x volume, also below average, so the print reflects thin two-sided markets rather than an identified event.

Conviction setups

HPE — 98 confirmation score, relative strength 97, Q3 earnings beat of 19.1%, 3.5x turnover, and 16% of runway to the prior high at 63.44. Invalidation: daily close below 51.13, which simultaneously breaks the 21-day average at 52.94 and the earnings-gap floor.

DELL — relative strength 99 and the largest earnings surprise of any 100B-plus company this window at 43.4%, closing precisely at the 514.00 prior swing high on 10.07B of dollar volume. Invalidation: daily close below 489.03; a loss of 514.00 first marks the retest as failed.

SPCX — 17.91B of dollar volume, the heaviest scanned name on the tape, at relative strength 99 with the 21-day and 50-day both rising and 6.7R of clear runway to 225.64. Invalidation: daily close below 141.30, which returns price beneath the 10-day at 141.85.

MAN — relative strength 98 coiling within 3.7% of its highs while ADP printed 38,000 and Challenger layoffs rose 58%; price and the labor data are in direct disagreement and Friday resolves it. Invalidation: daily close below 61.00, or a payrolls print below the 56,000 estimate.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Financials +1.63%, Consumer Discretionary +1.38%, Technology +1.32%, Real Estate +1.19%, Industrials +1.14%, Utilities +0.89%, Communication Services +0.85%, Health Care +0.18%

Lagging: Consumer Staples -0.32%, Materials -0.47%, Energy -0.72%

Only one sector led on both percentage and capital: Financials took the top gain and also the single largest dollar volume on the tape at 1.876B, which is what genuine allocation looks like rather than a rotation artifact. Consumer Discretionary ranked second on percentage while carrying 649M — tenth of eleven on dollar volume — so the second-best return was produced by the second-thinnest tape and should not be read as a demand signal. Real Estate posted 1.19% on 187M, the thinnest print in the complex.

The informative divergence is Energy. It finished worst at -0.72% while transacting 1.561B, the second-heaviest tape of any sector, on a day crude inventories drew 4,450,000 barrels against a 400,000 estimate and USO added 0.66%. Heavy volume distributing energy equities into rising underlying crude is a rejection of the commodity's signal, and it is the same message Materials sends at -0.47% while SLV gained 2.35% — the metals bid is not reaching the equities that produce metals. That is a strong argument the real-asset trade is financial demand, not a cycle call.

The leadership pairing reads as an easing bet rather than a growth bet: Financials and Real Estate together respond to the front of the curve, while Utilities holding 981M on a 0.89% gain shows the defensive bid never left. The read invalidates if Financials gives back its 1.63% while Energy's dollar volume stays elevated — that combination would mean the flow was a one-day curve trade rather than allocation.

Post-Market Gappers

The grid below captures the regular session as of the 4:21 PM scan, and its most extreme entries are trackers rather than companies: SMST, BMNZ and CONI are inverse crypto products whose 20% to 35% declines are the arithmetic of underlyings that rose 10% to 17%, while CIEG is a 2x long CIEN vehicle whose 22.0% loss encodes an 11% decline in a company that beat earnings by 22%.

Genuine single-name conviction sits on both extremes. CHPT at plus 75.7% on 16.8x turnover and RARE at minus 44.2% on 7.5x are the only two moves where volume fully supports the magnitude. SMMT at plus 17.8% on clinical data and PSNY at minus 27.6% on earnings are event-confirmed but participate less.

Separately from the regular session, the after-hours window is dominated by same-day releases rather than by any of the names above. LULU disclosed a weak Q3 outlook despite a 63.1% earnings beat, IOT raised full-year 2027 earnings and revenue guidance, OXM guided Q3 to a loss more than twice the estimated shortfall, ADBE named a new chief executive effective 1 December with the incumbent moving to executive chair, BALY disclosed a chief financial officer resignation effective 4 September, and KNOP missed on Q2 earnings while beating on sales. No post-4:00 PM prices are present in this feed, so these are disclosures rather than measured moves — stated as such rather than padded with estimates.

Stocks in play

Cross-scanner confirmation separates this list into two very different propositions. HPE and DELL appear in the Episodic Pivot screen and the daily setups list simultaneously, both Stage 2A with the 50-day above the 200-day, relative strength 97 and 99, on 3.86B and 10.07B of dollar volume — earnings beats landing on intact trends. SNOW and CHPT also clear the Episodic Pivot volume threshold, but CHPT carries relative strength 3 and SNOW closed 0.4% off the low of a 17% advance, so the same screen is describing structurally opposite situations.

SPCX is the capital story the confirmation score understates: 17.91B of dollar volume on 120.1M shares, more than any other scanned name, on a 20-day average pullback with relative strength 99 and both moving averages rising. It has been on the scan 26 consecutive sessions without becoming extended.

The crypto cluster — MSTR, HOOD, BMNR, CIFR, MARA, IREN — dominates the list by count and by move size, and is uniformly weak on trend: relative strength of 7, 65, 29, 26, 10 and 16 respectively. Six names moving 5% to 17% together, all with the 50-day below the 200-day except CIFR and MARA, is one correlated bet on a single asset expressed six ways, not six independent setups.

The consolidation screen is where the unlevered opportunity sits: DCTH at a 94 score, NEOG at 92, STGW at 91, TVTX at 90 and MAN at 90 are all Stage 2A coils with relative strength between 93 and 98, contracting on sub-1.0x volume within 10% of their highs while the tape spent the day chasing 17% crypto moves.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:32 AM ET

The tape at 8:32 AM is trading one variable: the labor market. IWM +1.43% against QQQ +0.09%, GLD +2.77% and SLV +2.71% with VIX at 15.31, and TLT +0.49% - four assets pricing the same rate-cut repricing off ADP at 38K versus 47K expected and Challenger job cuts jumping to 52,881 from 33,429. Gold bid while volatility is flat is a real-rate trade, not a fear trade, and that distinction is what makes this durable rather than a one-session scare.

The genuine dispersion is inside technology and no sector line shows it. Memory cost inflation is compressing hardware margins - NTAP fell 9.0% after a 21.7% EPS beat purely on gross margin guidance, HPE fell 4.32% on a 19.1% beat citing supply, and the leveraged AVGO trackers are down 7.6-7.8% on 4-5x turnover implying the underlying is off roughly 3.8%. Software is untouched: SNOW +23.2%, GTLB +10.3%, DDOG +5.9%. Technology at -0.36% is averaging a thirty-point spread into a single number. DELL, up 14.6% on a 43% beat, is the name that says the shock lands on components rather than on assemblers.

Two things argue against the bullish read. New lows outnumber new highs 114 to 98 despite a 1.52 advance-decline ratio, and T2108 at 49.5 is exactly neutral - the median stock did not participate. And both SPY at 765.56 and QQQ at 708.28 are trading below their own 10- and 21-day averages while the screen is green. This morning's gaps are also fading the overnight winners: SNOW -2.9%, DDOG -1.96%, while NTAP gaps +2.18%.

Takeaway:This is a rate-repricing rotation, not a broadening - the median stock is not participating, with 114 new lows against 98 new highs and T2108 at exactly neutral. Levels matter, entries do not, until tomorrow's 8:30 AM payroll print clears.
Morning10:32 AM ET

The morning tape is a rate-cut trade dressed as risk-on. The 10:00 ET ISM Services beat (55.4 vs 54.3) split its internals — Prices Paid hot at 72.6, Employment contracting at 47.8 — and the market chose the soft-labor read. GLD +1.9% and SLV +1.8% are breaking out while VIX falls under 15, a debasement bid, not a fear bid, with TLT confirming yields lower.

Breadth is GREEN (5,863 advancers to 3,276) but T2108 is dead-neutral at 49.5 and IWM is red — the advance is broad in count, narrow in cap. Financials carry the largest dollar volume of any green sector while Consumer Discretionary leads on percentage; Staples and Health Care are sold. SNOW +23.8% on a 39% EPS beat leads earnings; CIEN is the tell of the day, down 10.7% on a 22% beat.

Takeaway:Dovish-rates risk-on with a neutral T2108 underneath it — favor SNOW and SPCX pullback entries over chasing squeezes like CHPT; tomorrow's jobs report is the whole thesis's invalidation.
Midday12:32 PM ET

The tape is trading two contradictory data sets from the same morning. The labor complex deteriorated across four separate series — payroll processing at 38K, layoff announcements up 58% month-over-month, claims drifting to 206K, and services employment still contracting at 47.8 — while the services headline beat at 55.4 with new orders accelerating to 60.9. Weak labor with strong activity is what lets the market price easing without pricing recession, and it is why GLD +2.26% and SLV +2.67% can rally while VIX falls 4.08% to 14.58.

The buried contradiction is that services prices paid accelerated to 72.6. Cuts discounted into rising inflation is a currency-debasement bid, not a growth bid — which is why the crypto brokerages and the metals are moving as one position: HOOD +14.90%, CRCL +14.66%, MSTR +12.72%, CIFR +11.30%, with the miners implied up about 3%. Barrick missed by 57.2% two days ago and the miners rallied regardless, confirming the bid is monetary rather than operational.

Against all of that, three things argue the rally is thinner than the index. IWM is up only 0.35% against the Dow's 1.16%, which is backwards for a genuine rate-cut trade. The megacaps carrying the index weight have traded 38% to 48% of an average day's volume while SPY itself has done 63%. And the largest single move in the market is a stock on no card at all — AVGO, down roughly 4.3% inferred from four leveraged trackers falling 8.4% to 8.9%, making semiconductors the one group absent from a 1.03% Nasdaq advance.

Takeaway:Broad in count, narrow in structure: only half the market sits above intermediate trend and QQQ at 717.15 still has not reclaimed its 21-day average at 717.54. Tomorrow's payroll print, estimated +56K against a prior of -23K, resolves the metals, the crypto complex and the rate-cut premium on a single number.
Power hour2:33 PM ET

The tape is holding its highs into the last ninety minutes, but the composition has not improved since midday. SPY at 773.72 is above every daily and weekly average; QQQ at 718.66 still is not — its 5-week average sits 1.87 points overhead at 720.53. IWM has added just 0.33% against SPY +1.12%, so the thrust that produced 71.8% advancers has not reached the small-cap complex.

What actually moved money today was not what moved most on percentage. Financials carried $1.06B of dollar volume against Consumer Discretionary's $411M despite trailing it on price, and SPCX alone traded $13.97B. Meanwhile the entire crypto-fintech leadership block — MSTR, CIFR, MARA, BMNR — ran on roughly 1x volume, with only HOOD at 2.01x showing genuine participation.

Two post-earnings names tell opposite stories into the close. SNOW gapped 23.35% on a 38.76% beat and trades below VWAP, 4.3% off its 384.56 high. DELL gapped 1.20% lower on a 43.38% beat and is now +4.98% on 1.96x volume. Same week, same sector, and only one of them is being accumulated. Watch whether AVGO's trackers — AVGG, AVL, AVGX, all down near 8% — stabilize before the bell, because a semiconductor leader fading its beat while its sector gains 1.43% does not usually stay contained.

Takeaway:Long bias holds while SPY stays above 769.21 and VIX beneath 15.20, but this is a spike inside a market where only half the universe is above its 40-day average. Tomorrow's 8:30 payroll print, with wages estimated to triple to +0.3%, is what resolves it.
Closing4:32 PM ET

The tape closed on a contradiction it chose to read bullishly. ISM Services beat at 55.4 with new orders accelerating to 60.9, but the same report's employment index sat at 47.8 in contraction and prices paid rose to 72.6 — and after ADP at 38,000 and Challenger layoffs jumping 58% to 52,881, the market took demand-intact-hiring-broken as confirmation the easing case survives. SPY closed plus 0.97%, DIA plus 1.13%, QQQ plus 1.12%, IWM only plus 0.36%.

The cross-asset signature refuses the simple version. GLD added 1.77% and SLV 2.35% while VIX fell 6.05% to 14.28 and TLT managed 0.15% — gold bid with volatility collapsing is not fear, and gold bid with duration flat is not a rate-cut bond rally. That leaves real-asset demand against a 72.6 services prices print, and it explains why Financials led at plus 1.63% on the largest dollar volume of any sector while Energy fell 0.72% on the second-heaviest tape despite a 4,450,000 barrel crude draw.

Underneath, the session's largest coordinated flow was crypto-equity: MSTR plus 17.34%, HOOD plus 16.67%, BMNR plus 14.26%, CIFR plus 14.10%, visible in the movers grid mainly as three inverse trackers collapsing 20% to 35%. The single cleanest warning came from a name absent entirely — CIEN beat earnings by 22% and its 2x long tracker fell 21.97%, implying roughly an 11% decline in the underlying, the same rejection LULU took on a 63% beat.

The structure has not confirmed the move. QQQ finished at 717.67 against a 21-day average of 717.57 and remains under its 5-week at 720.33, T2108 sits at 49.5 with exactly half the market above its 40-day despite 70.5% advancers, and the four-day cumulative momentum reading is 1,216 up to 1,036 down — near equilibrium. The choppiness measure rose from 48.43 to 51.95 on a 1% up day, which trend days do not do.

Takeaway:A one-percent advance built on the dovish half of a hot services print, with QQQ finishing one hundredth of a percent above its 21-day average and T2108 at 49.5 — participation without position. Nonfarm payrolls at 8:30 ET, estimate 56,000 against a prior of -23,000, reprices the entire thesis in one number.
Summary
Watchlist

BE — trigger 238.41 at the session high; relative strength 97 with 5.1R to the prior high at 351.28, but 1.3x volume on an 8.2% move is the least confirmed advance in the group. Needs volume above 2.0x on the trigger to be worth the 9.3% stop.

TVTX — trigger 68.03 at the coil high; relative strength 98, 2.2% from its highs, contracting on 0.89x volume with no resistance to the 73.51 objective and no catalyst to force the resolution.

DCTH — trigger 17.15 at the range high; the highest consolidation score on the tape at 94 with relative strength 95, but 0.44x turnover means the coil is currently unwatched by anyone.

QQQ — trigger 720.33, the 5-week average. Today's 1.12% gain ended at 717.67 against a 21-day average of 717.57, so the index has not yet proven the reclaim; 720.33 is where it does.

CIEN — no trigger, a diagnostic. A 22% earnings beat that traded down roughly 11% is the clearest available read on how the market now prices AI-networking capital expenditure, and it will lead the rest of the optical complex.

Traps

CHPT — the failing number is relative strength 3 against a 75.7% single-day gain. Short interest of 36.75% on a 25.9M float and 16.8x turnover explain the magnitude mechanically; price closed 51.0% above its 21-day average at 6.04 while still 27.6% below its own prior high, with the 50-day beneath the 200-day.

SNOW — the failing number is the close at 356.98 against a 384.56 session high and a 355.47 low. Finishing 0.4% off the low of a 17% advance on a 38.8% earnings beat is distribution into good news, and the scan plan already reads not tradeable with the trigger passed.

IREN — the failing number is 0.96x relative volume on a 4.8% gain. Every other crypto-adjacent name traded above 1.0x; price at 41.55 is still under the 50-day at 42.05 in an intermediate downtrend at relative strength 16.

SGLD — the failing number is 0.48x relative volume on a 21.9% decline, with a 97.3% average true range. That is post-listing giveback after a 180% debut, not distribution, and reading it as a signal misreads a mechanical print.

CRCA — the failing number is a 12.4% daily average range on a 2x leveraged tracker whose scan stop sits 18.2% away, at relative strength 2 and 86% below its prior high. Leverage decay works against any path that is not immediately directional.

Tomorrow

Nonfarm payrolls at 8:30 ET, estimate 56,000 against a prior month of -23,000, is the binary the entire session was positioned for. The asymmetry sits in average hourly earnings: a payrolls miss with earnings at or below the 0.3% estimate confirms today's trade, while a miss with earnings above 0.3% is the stagflationary combination nothing in this positioning hedges.

Watch whether GLD and SLV hold their 1.77% and 2.35% gains while TLT stays flat. That specific pairing is the real-asset read; if TLT rallies with them, the trade converts to a duration trade and Financials' 1.63% leadership loses its rationale.

QQQ must clear 720.33, its 5-week average, to convert today's 717.67 close from a reclaim attempt into a resumption. SPY already holds both its 21-day at 769.17 and 5-week at 771.56, so a widening gap between them means the Nasdaq is the laggard, not the leader its 1.12% suggests.

T2108 at 49.5 against 70.5% advancers must resolve. A follow-through session that lifts T2108 above 55 validates the breadth; another 70% advance day that leaves it near 50 confirms the move is repair, not expansion.

The crypto-equity complex — MSTR, HOOD, BMNR, CIFR, MARA — moved 10% to 17% as one correlated position with relative strength between 7 and 65. A reversal there hits Financials' dollar-volume leadership and the six inverse and leveraged trackers simultaneously.

CIEN trading down roughly 11% on a 22% earnings beat, alongside LULU down on a 63% beat, tests whether the market is now systematically rejecting backward-looking beats. If the next set of guides trades the same way, the AI-infrastructure cohort's 17% to 43% surprise rates stop being a reason to own it.
