Market regime
Assessment

The tape closed green and below its own averages at the same time. SPY at 765.20 finished under both the 10-day at 765.83 and the 21-day at 769.02; QQQ at 709.31 sits under its 10-day at 712.40, its 21-day at 717.55 and its 50-day at 710.89, holding only the 30-day at 708.65 — by 0.66 points. On the weekly frame SPY still holds its 10-week at 757.88 while QQQ has lost its at 709.89. Whatever today was, it was a bounce inside a short-term downtrend, not a resumption of one.

The leadership order says the same thing. IWM +1.18% beat DIA +0.60%, SPY +0.36% and QQQ +0.12% — a rate-sensitivity ranking, not a growth ranking, and exactly what a 38,000 ADP print produces when it lands nine thousand under consensus. The scanner surfaced eleven reversal setups and zero breakouts, which is the same fact expressed in single names.

The strength was real but it was repair, not extension. The percentage leaders are wreckage: ASTS 53.4% off its high, CBRS 52.1% off, ONDS 50.2% off, IREN 48.7% off, UAMY 73.3% off, EOSE 81.9% off. Beta chased what was most broken.

Risk

Seven names in ten rose and new lows still beat new highs 268 to 182. Those two facts cannot both describe a healthy advance, and the second is the one with a longer memory — a 4-to-1 ratio of names up 4% against names down 4% did not stop the 52-week-low list from outrunning the high list by 86. T2108 at 44.7 confirms it: after a session with 69.3% advancers, fewer than half of 10,373 issues are above their 40-day average.

The 5-day momentum tally is still net negative at 768 up against 877 down across three days, so today did not flip the intermediate picture, it interrupted it. Chop is at 48.4 and falling from 49.5, with QQQ at 47.6 dropping faster than SPY at 49.7 — the Nasdaq is the side that is actually trending, and it is trending down.

Next

Weight the 268-to-182 new-low reading and the sub-21-EMA closes over the 2.26 advance-decline ratio; this is a bounce that has to prove itself by reclaiming SPY 769.02 and QQQ 717.55. Losing QQQ 708.65 removes the last average holding the reversal cohort up.

Futures & Macro Snapshot

The session had one driver and it landed at 8:15 AM: ADP private payrolls at 38,000 against a 47,000 estimate and 46,000 prior. The market did not read it as a growth scare — it read it as a rate-path repricing, and the transmission is legible across every cross-asset line. VIX fell 6.30% to 15.31, IWM outran QQQ by 1.06 points because small caps carry the most floating-rate debt per dollar of earnings, and GLD +1.40% with SLV +1.92% is the real-rate expression of the same trade.

The conflict is in the long end. TLT rose 0.11%. If a labour miss of that size had genuinely moved the growth outlook, 20-year duration would have been bid hard, and it was not — with the 10-year at 4.75% against the 2-year at 4.34% for a 41 basis point spread, this is a front-end cut trade with the curve doing nothing. Gold bid while VIX falls and duration sits still is positioning for easier policy, not hedging a recession.

What caps it is on the price side. Yesterday's ISM manufacturing prices index printed 71.1, unchanged and deep in expansion, while ISM employment fell to 51.2 from 52.8 and the headline missed at 54.6 against 55.2. Softening labour with sticky input costs is the one combination that prevents the front end from pricing what equities just celebrated.

Cross-asset confirmation from crude is the tell the equity tape ignored: EIA stocks drew 4.45M barrels against a 0.4M estimate and USO closed +0.07%. Eleven times the expected draw and no price response is a demand signal that agrees with ADP and disagrees with IWM.

Key news & catalysts

DELL is the session and it is not close. Q2 EPS of 7.04 against 4.91 expected is a 43.38% surprise, AI revenue more than doubled, and the stock added 15.22% on 16.74B of dollar volume with a perfect 100 conviction score and RS 99 — the only name today where a beat came attached to an AI demand narrative rather than a cost line. The 2x tracker DLLL printed +30.42% on 6.66x relative turnover, mechanically confirming the underlying rather than adding information.

The rest of the 1 September cohort beat and got sold, which is the day's real lesson. CRDO beat by 2.56% and fell 20.04%. MDB beat by 17.28% and fell 12.72%. PANW beat by 4.29% and, via the 18.63% decline in the 2x PALU, traded near -9%. HPE beat by 19.10% and raised FY2026 guidance for a 0.96% gain on 2.62B of turnover. Beat magnitude explained nothing; what separated DELL from the field was that its upside came from AI systems revenue, not margin.

EOSE +18.09% on a Google clean-energy agreement is the cleanest confirmed catalyst outside earnings — 12.34% gap, 3.09x relative volume, 73.2M shares. FCEL -16.39% on the same theme is its mirror: the chief executive said electricity rather than chips would choke the AI build-out, which is bullish for grid capacity and bearish for a company that has to fund it. CBRS +7.26% on a 165 MW Finnish data-centre agreement extends the same power-constraint trade.

Two names the scanners never surfaced deserve attention. COST reported August net sales of 23.7B, up 9.9%, with comparable sales up 8.4% and e-commerce up 17.9% — an accelerating consumer print that sits awkwardly against a 38,000 ADP number and did not move XLP past +0.33%. CRWD launched its agentic SOC and Falcon Guardian products into a tape that was actively dumping security software, which is the sector context that headline lacks on its own.

Conviction setups

DELL is the only earnings reaction today where the beat came from demand rather than cost — 43.38% EPS surprise with AI revenue more than doubling, 16.74B of turnover, RS 99, conviction 100. It is the reference point every other beat failed against; invalidation is a close below the 452.58 21 EMA.

The market is paying for AI hardware attach and selling software regardless of beat size: DELL +15.22% on a 43% beat against CRDO -20.04% on a 2.6% beat, MDB -12.72% on a 17.3% beat and HPE +0.96% on a 19.1% beat with raised guidance. This inverts if HPE or MDB reclaims its gap on above-average volume.

Today was repair, not extension. SPY at 765.20 and QQQ at 709.31 both closed below their 10- and 21-day averages, and the percentage leaders were names 44% to 82% off their highs. Invalidation is SPY closing above 769.02 and QQQ above 717.55 on consecutive sessions.

The rate-cut bid is front-end only. VIX -6.30%, GLD +1.40%, SLV +1.92% and IWM +1.18% all repriced policy while TLT managed +0.11% against a 41 basis point 2s10s spread. If duration does not follow within two sessions, the equity move has no rates confirmation behind it.

Sectors & money flow

Leading: Materials +1.69%, Communication Services +1.48%, Financials +0.80%, Health Care +0.77%, Energy +0.40%, Consumer Staples +0.33%, Utilities +0.26%, Consumer Discretionary +0.24%, Industrials +0.03%

Lagging: Technology -0.09%, Real Estate -0.59%

The percentage leaderboard and the money are in different places. XLB tops the board at +1.69% on 680M of dollar volume and XLC follows at +1.48% on 573M — the two thinnest tapes of the eleven. Together they drew 1.25B, less than XLI pulled by itself to finish unchanged at +0.03%. The genuine capital sat in Industrials at 1.86B, Financials at 1.80B and Energy at 1.75B, none of which led. Materials leading on that little money is a precious-metals print — CDE +6.04%, HL +8.37%, and the 3x inverse miner tracker GDXD down 10.29%, implying GDX up roughly 3.4% — not a cyclical bid on industrial demand.

Technology closing red at -0.09% while NVDA rose 3.24% on 34.2B, the single largest dollar flow in the market, is the day's sharpest internal contradiction. It resolves as a split inside the sector rather than weakness across it: semiconductors and hardware were bought, software and security were sold. CRDO -20.04% on 4.99B, MDB -12.72% on 2.77B, and the 2x trackers PALU -18.63% and PLTU -11.62% implying PANW near -9% and PLTR near -5.8%, are enough negative dollar flow to sink an ETF that NVDA alone should have carried green.

Energy is the read that should not hold. Crude inventories drew 4.45M barrels against a 0.4M estimate, eleven times the expected draw, and XLE managed +0.40% with USO at +0.07%. A supply shock that large producing no price response is the oil market voting with the ADP print on demand, not with the inventory number on supply.

Invalidation: this reads as a broadening bid only while XLF and XLE stay green. If those turn negative on the next session and XLB holds its lead, the rotation is not breadth at all — it is a metals-and-rates hedge wearing a cyclical jersey, and the correct posture inverts.

Post-Market Gappers

This list is regular-session data; the snapshot's mover buckets carry no distinct after-hours gap yet, and the only identifiable after-the-bell event in the data is the AVGO print. Say that plainly rather than manufacture an extended-hours story that is not in the numbers.

Two of the top three gainers are not moves at all. HOS shows +3,345.63% on relative volume of exactly 1.00 with today's volume equal to its own average — a listing or corporate-action artifact, not a trade. SGLD +55.31% is a Nasdaq debut with a 175.79% gap and a 108.88% ATR, which is why its A-grade score of 72 is measuring an IPO print rather than a setup.

Strip those and the real gainers are a biotech and micro-cap reversal cluster — IRD +16.19% on a 94 A-grade with 5.04x turnover behind Opus Genetics gene-therapy cohort data, CURR +19.05% and CNTB +16.88% both at 76 A-grade, MNTK +21.02% on 7.49x — none above 22M of dollar volume, so the conviction scores are earned on relative volume in thin tapes.

The losers carry the real capital and the real information: CRDO -20.04% on 4.99B and MDB -12.72% on 2.77B are the two largest dollar declines and both followed EPS beats. RARE -42.69% is the cleanest confirmed event on the board — the Phase 3 Aspire study of apazunersen missed both primary and key secondary endpoints in Angelman syndrome, which is a permanent repricing rather than a drawdown.

Stocks in play

Ranked by conviction score, filtered to 40 or better or 1.5x relative volume. The distribution is the point: DELL at 100 and IRD at 94 are the only two above 80, and after that the scores sit in the 44-to-76 band where relative volume, not structure, is doing the scoring.

Nine of the twenty are Stage 4 or unstaged — ASTS, EOSE, UAMY, IREZ, CRDO and the unstaged SGLD and STDN among them. A conviction list weighted toward broken structures is what a repair rally produces, and it is why the scanner's own setup mix came in at eleven reversals and zero breakouts.

Watch for cross-scanner confirmation, because there is almost none. DELL appears in Stocks in Play, Daily Setups and the episodic-pivot list simultaneously — three independent screens agreeing. GTLB and EOSE each appear twice. Every other name here is a single-screen hit, which is a materially weaker proposition than the score alone implies.

Tape reading
Pre-market8:33 AM ET

The morning's real event is not the index tape — it is that gold, silver and the crypto proxies are being liquidated in the same hour. GLD is off 2.63%, SLV 3.10%, and MSTZ, the inverse MicroStrategy tracker, is gapping 7.01%. One position is being closed across three markets, and no card on this page carries it.

The trigger was ADP at 8:15 ET: 38,000 against a 47,000 estimate. Bonds refused the dovish read — TLT is down 0.58%, so yields rose into a jobs miss — because yesterday's ISM paired softening activity at 54.6 with prices paid still at 71.1, and USO running 4.31% keeps that inflation leg alive. Higher real yields hit the zero-coupon asset and long-duration tech in the same motion, which is why QQQ at -1.34% is carrying an 85 basis point discount to DIA.

What argues against reading this as a growth scare: VIX sits at 16.31, unchanged. What held: mega-cap health care is bid into the weakness — JNJ gapping 1.87%, LLY 2.70% on trial data, UNH 0.69% — and DELL is up 8.67% on a 43.4% earnings beat with the largest dollar volume in the scan behind it.

Takeaway:Treat this as a positioning unwind, not a growth scare, while VIX holds under 18.50 and SPY above 758 — and note the confirmed buying is in health care and DELL, not in the index.
Morning10:32 AM ET

Private payrolls at 38,000 against a 47,000 estimate set the morning's direction, and the tape bought the rate-cut beneficiaries: IWM +0.93% ahead of SPY +0.45% and QQQ +0.22%, with SLV +1.76% outrunning GLD +1.40% and volatility down 5.4% to 15.46. The long bond declined to participate — TLT is flat and the 10-year backed up to 4.75% — which makes the metals bid a debasement trade rather than an easing trade. Factory orders at +0.9% against +0.6% expected argue the goods economy is firming even as the labor side decelerates.

Underneath the index prints the earnings tape is doing the opposite. CRDO beat by 2.6% and is down 17.4% on 1.19 billion dollars, MDB beat by 17.3% and is down 12.3%, PANW beat by 4.3% and is down 8.8%. DELL beat by 43.4%, printed 483.94, and now sits at 447.01 on its session low. Every company that beat is trading below its opening print, and roughly 2.95 billion dollars of that selling is concentrated in three names — against a technology sector ETF that has traded 204 million all morning.

Breadth reads green and shallow at the same time: 66.1% advancers and 420 names up 4%, but 88 new highs against 257 new lows and T2108 at 44.7. Materials leads on 151.8 million dollars while health care holds 391.9 million — the percentage leader and the money leader are different sectors, and the money is in the defensive one. The Beige Book at 2:00 PM ET is the only scheduled item left that can move the rate path before the close.

Takeaway:Broad but shallow — the advance is one session old on a base where new lows outnumber new highs three to one, and every earnings beat is being distributed into. The read holds while VIX stays under 16.34 and IWM holds 290.57.
Midday12:32 PM ET

The session is trading a 38,000 ADP print against a 47,000 estimate, not an earnings tape. IWM leading QQQ by 66 basis points, VIX down 5.8% to 15.40 and gold bid at 400.82 are all one trade - a lower rate path. The piece that has not shown up is TLT, unchanged at 81.82, and duration declining to rally on a labor miss is the strongest argument against taking the equity read at face value.

Underneath, the rotation is inside Technology rather than across sectors. The sector prints -0.13%, but NVDA is +4.6% on 18.03B of dollar volume while CRDO is -17.8%, MDB -11.0% and PANW -9.2%, all on more than 1.8B each. Hardware is being bought and software is being sold, and the flat sector bar hides it entirely. The earnings reactions rank almost perfectly by surprise size: DELL beat by 43.4% and rose, CRDO beat by 2.6% and fell 17.8%.

The behavioral tell for the afternoon is that both big gaps are being distributed. DELL has given back 5.3% from 483.94 and GTLB 7.9% from 55.55, now below VWAP. Breadth agrees that this is shallower than it looks - 67.2% advancers, but 306 new lows against 134 new highs and 861 names down 25% over three sessions against 528 up. The Beige Book at 2:00 PM ET is the only scheduled catalyst left before the close.

Takeaway:The rate-cut reflex is running without bond-market confirmation, and both marquee earnings gaps are being sold into strength. SPY losing the 761.73 shelf reprices ADP from easing to slowdown.
Power hour2:32 PM ET

A 38K private-payroll miss against a 47K estimate set the direction and small caps took it — IWM +1.15% is running nearly eight times QQQ +0.15%, with VIX down 6.9% to 15.21. The problem with calling it an easing trade is that TLT has not moved: flat at 81.86 with the 10-year at 4.75%, two basis points higher than Monday. Equities are discounting cuts the bond market is not.

Underneath the index, the session is a software de-rating. CRDO beat by 2.6% and is down 21.0%, MDB beat by 17.3% and is down 12.3%, PANW beat by 4.3% and is down 10.3%, and GTLB beat by 33.5%, gapped to a fifty-two-week high at 55.55, and now trades below its volume-weighted average at 49.66. DELL is the exception, +9.5% on a 43.4% surprise and $10.7B traded — the market is paying for AI-infrastructure beats and selling software-multiple beats on the same tape.

That leaves QQQ below its 10-, 21-, 30- and 50-day averages simultaneously while still green, held there almost entirely by NVDA +3.4% on $24.7B — the largest single-name flow of the day. Breadth reads GREEN at 7,181 advancers to 3,139, but new lows still lead new highs 272 to 159 and only 44.7% of names hold their 40-day. Sector leadership tells the same story: Materials tops the board on the second-thinnest dollar volume on the table while Energy carries the most money for a fifth of the move.

Takeaway:Broad tape, narrow structure — the advance is a rate-cut bid that bonds have not confirmed, running over a software de-rating that a rising QQQ is hiding. The read fails on QQQ below 708.63 or GLD back under 396.75.
Closing4:32 PM ET

One number drove the whole session: ADP private payrolls at 38,000 against a 47,000 estimate. The tape read it as a rate-path repricing rather than a growth scare, and the leadership order proves it — IWM +1.18% over DIA +0.60%, SPY +0.36% and QQQ +0.12%, with VIX down 6.30% to 15.31 and GLD and SLV up 1.40% and 1.92%. The hole in that story is TLT at +0.11%: the long end did not participate, so this is a front-end cut trade with no duration confirmation behind it.

DELL was the session — 43.38% EPS surprise with AI revenue more than doubling, +15.22% on 16.74B of dollar volume, a perfect conviction score. The instructive part is everyone else. CRDO beat and fell 20.04% on 4.99B, MDB beat by 17.28% and fell 12.72%, PANW beat and traded near -9%, HPE beat by 19.10% and raised guidance for +0.96%. Beat size explained nothing; AI demand attach explained everything. That split is why Technology closed red at -0.09% on the same day NVDA rose 3.24% on the largest single dollar flow in the market.

The internals disagree with the close. Advancers beat decliners 7,346 to 3,247, and new 52-week lows still beat new highs 268 to 182 with T2108 at 44.7. Both SPY at 765.20 and QQQ at 709.31 finished below their 10- and 21-day averages, and the percentage leaders were names 44% to 82% off their highs. After the bell, AVGO printed Q3 EPS of 3.32 against 3.24 and revenue of 29.591B against 29.362B — a 2.5% beat that has to clear the bar DELL just raised.

Takeaway:A green close that is still below its own 10- and 21-day averages, led by wreckage rather than leadership — treat it as repair until SPY reclaims 769.02 and QQQ 717.55. Jobless claims and ISM services Thursday, then payrolls Friday at an estimated 58,000, decide whether the rate-cut bid survives contact with the data.
Summary
Watchlist

NVDA — trigger 227.95, where the day high and the 227.92 prior swing high coincide; nothing overhead above it. Needs relative volume above 1.21 to confirm, and a VWAP reclaim it failed today.

SNOW — trigger 319.25, which requires clearing the day high plus the 10 and 21 EMAs at 321.08 and 317.40 in one move. Below 303.89 the largest percentage beat of the day becomes a failed gap.

NU — trigger 15.48 with the only rising 10-over-21-over-50 stack on the board at 14.74, 14.55 and 14.19. Prior high at 16.22 caps the first leg at 0.9R.

MDB — trigger 398.50 as a gap-reclaim on a 17.28% beat, with the 50 EMA at 381.57 seven points above spot at 374.53. Not taken as a trade because day-one gap lows rarely hold; watched because the beat was real.

AVGO — Q3 EPS 3.32 vs 3.24 and revenue 29.591B vs 29.362B after the bell. On a 1.75T capitalisation, a 2.5% beat against the DELL bar decides whether the AI-hardware bid survives Thursday.

QQQ 708.65 — the 30-day average and the last one it holds. Below it, nothing supports the Stage 4 reversal cohort that led today.

Traps

HOS +3,345.63% at relative volume of exactly 1.00, with today's volume equal to its own 20-day average — an artifact, not a trade.

SGLD +55.31% is a Nasdaq trading debut: 175.79% gap, 108.88% ATR, and a computed stop at -5.11 on an 8.33 stock. The A-grade 72 is scoring an IPO print.

GTLB gapped 22.42% and closed 10.00%, below VWAP, having surrendered 5.95 of 10 points. The catalyst was an upgrade to Market Perform — a move to neutral — and price sits 17.8% above the 42.11 21 EMA.

FCEL carries an RS rating of 98 while trading 25.4% below its 21 EMA with stochastic at 8.1 and a 13.8% ATR. The relative strength number is trailing data describing a stock that no longer exists in that form.

RDDT rose 9.22% on 0.76x relative volume with the 50 EMA at 163.12 overhead. A move that size on below-average participation is unconfirmed by definition.

GIII scores 72 on an A grade while carrying a disclosed 460M permanent revenue hole from the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger licence exits.

Tomorrow

Initial jobless claims at 8:30 AM, est 205,000 vs 203,000 prior — the highest-frequency test of whether the 38,000 ADP print was signal or noise. Fed's Waller speaks the same minute.

ISM Services PMI at 10:00 AM, est 54.3 vs 54.1, with the services employment index at 47.4 already in contraction. A second sub-50 employment read alongside ADP converts today's rate-cut rotation into a growth scare.

Nonfarm payrolls Friday at 8:30 AM, est +58,000 against -23,000 prior, with average hourly earnings est +0.3% MoM. Today's IWM and gold positioning is a direct bet on this number.

AVGO's reaction to a 2.5% EPS and 0.8% revenue beat is the cleanest test of whether AI hardware still gets paid for merely beating, or now has to beat the way DELL did.

Thursday's reporters — CIEN, ZS, IOT, GWRE, LULU, DOCU, PATH — put two more security and infrastructure software names into a tape that sold CRDO, MDB and PANW today after all three beat.

QQQ 708.65, the 30-day average it holds by 0.66 points, and SPY 769.02, the 21-day it closed 0.5% beneath. The first decides whether the reversal cohort has support; the second decides whether this bounce becomes a trend.
